Application of electrostatic spraying technology in motors

Spray painting is a step in the motor manufacturing process. In recent years, due to the guidance of national environmental protection policies and the increasing awareness of occupational health, improving the spray painting process has become a goal for many motor manufacturers.

Electrostatic spraying technology is a rapidly developing new technology internationally in recent years, and it is widely used in surface treatment across various industrial sectors. Compared with traditional spraying processes, it not only saves materials and improves environmental cleanliness, but also mechanizes and streamlines the spraying process, reduces defect rates, and achieves excellent coating results. Electrostatic spraying technology significantly increases labor productivity and improves working conditions, thereby generating considerable socio-economic benefits. From a user experience perspective, it better meets the needs of businesses across various industries.

Currently, traditional liquid spraying and manual spraying methods suffer from problems such as high paint waste, severe environmental pollution, difficult cleanup, low production efficiency, inconsistent product color, and unstable quality. Electrostatic spraying can solve these problems. Its principle is the same as electrostatic dust removal; it's a new technology that uses an electrostatic field created by high voltage for spraying. Compared to manual spraying, it offers advantages such as higher efficiency, less waste, better quality, and improved worker health.

1. Basic Principles of Electrostatic Spray Painting

Electrostatic spraying uses the object being coated as the positive electrode, which is normally grounded; the paint atomizing device is the negative electrode, connected to a negative high-voltage power supply, thus creating a high-voltage electrostatic field between the two electrodes. Due to the corona discharge generated at the cathode, the sprayed paint medium becomes charged and further atomized.

Following the principle of "like charges repel, unlike charges attract", the charged coating medium, under the action of the electric field, forms a wrapping effect on the coated object, and flows directionally along the electric field lines towards the positively charged surface of the coated object, accumulating into a uniform and firmly adhered film.

Electrostatic spraying technology can also use positive corona discharge, but the critical voltage of negative corona discharge is lower than that of positive corona discharge, and it is more stable and less likely to generate sparks. Under normal circumstances, the object to be coated is grounded as the positive terminal.

2. Characteristics of electrostatic spraying

●Advantages

(1) The paint film is uniform and full, with good adhesion and decorative properties.

(2) High production efficiency and good working conditions. Multiple electrostatic spray guns are fixedly installed to achieve simultaneous spraying. It is easy to achieve semi-automation or automation. Compared with compressed air spraying, the production efficiency is more than 10 times higher than manual spraying. It completely eliminates the heavy labor of manual spraying (painting) and is especially suitable for large-scale assembly line operations.

(3) It improves the utilization rate of paint, with the utilization rate of paint materials reaching 80-90%. It generally saves about 60% of paint compared to manual spraying, reduces paint mist and pollution, and improves occupational health conditions.

(4) The paint film has high quality and good adhesion, especially the paint film is uniform and smooth.

●Disadvantages

(1) For workpieces with complex shapes, it is not easy to spray paint on concave holes, and the paint film on convex parts is uneven, often requiring process adjustment or manual repair.

(2) A complete set of spray painting equipment is required, which requires a large investment.

(3) Electrostatic spraying requires strict maintenance and management. Improper operation or poor management can easily lead to electric shock, high voltage breakdown discharge, or even fire.

●Safety Precautions

(1) Voltage and current control. The voltage should be controlled below 90,000 volts during use. Exceeding this voltage will be detrimental to human health. In addition, the short-circuit current should be controlled below 0.7mA. (2) When spraying manually, the spray gun should be brought to the ground immediately after use to release residual charge in time. At the same time, the human body should not be insulated from the ground. (3) The distance between the workpiece to be coated and the nozzle of the spray gun should not be too close. It should be kept at more than 10cm to prevent short circuits and sparks. (4) Before operation, it is necessary to check whether the wiring connections of each part are normal. Pay attention to the proper grounding of the machine casing and the workpiece to avoid high voltage static electricity.
