Pilz: The Impact of Lighting on Mechanical Safety

2026-04-06 06:48:40 · · #1

In today's mobile internet era, many people have become "phubbers." After prolonged use of mobile phones, many experience decreased vision, dizziness, and blurred vision. In industrial production, machine operators spend eight hours a day in front of machinery. What hazards might arise from insufficient lighting?

Insufficient lighting at the work site most commonly causes eye fatigue, and may also cause eye irritation, itchy eyes, visual disturbances, blurred vision, and symptoms such as headaches, fatigue, and dizziness .

• Due to insufficient lighting or light reflection, one often needs to get closer and closer to objects to see them clearly, or needs to move the body to different angles to see them clearly, which can lead to musculoskeletal symptoms such as neck or back pain .

• Insufficient on-site lighting may even lead to employee misoperation and production accidents .

Since machine lighting conditions affect employee health and safety, what standards in China regulate this? GB/T 28780 (equivalent to EN1837) is a standard for interior and exterior lighting of stationary and mobile machinery. It specifies the parameters of the overall lighting system to ensure safe operation of the machine and efficiency of visual work inside and outside the machine. The following are some of the most important technical requirements in this standard:

• The required illuminance depends on being sufficiently high and uniform to ensure safety and comfort at all stages of visual work. A minimum maintenance illuminance of 500 lx should generally be provided, with a minimum uniformity (Emin/E) of 0.7 in the work area and a minimum uniformity of 0.3 in the immediate vicinity of the work area .

• The overall lighting system should avoid direct glare to machine operators and other workers in the vicinity. This can be achieved by appropriately shielding the luminaires, adjusting their position and direction, or treating the surface of the luminaires.

• The design of lighting systems should avoid flicker effects, and the design and adjustment of lighting systems should avoid visual interference and shadows.

• When selecting lighting fixtures, they should comply with GB7000. During installation, they should provide the necessary lighting for the work while avoiding interference with the work and hazards to operation; minimize dust accumulation on the surface of the lighting fixtures and light sources; and facilitate maintenance. For example, in the grinding wheel example shown below, the correct installation position of the lighting fixtures can effectively prevent the impact of flying particles on the fixtures.
