Comparison of motor winding types and characteristics

2026-04-06 05:46:08 · · #1

The windings are specific types determined by different motor manufacturers based on motor performance requirements and manufacturing processes. This is a very interesting topic, both in terms of operability and its correlation with motor performance.

A coil is the basic unit that makes up a winding, which is the arrangement and connection of coils according to a certain pattern. Coils can be divided into multi-turn coils and single-turn coils.

Motor windings can be divided into single-layer windings and double-layer windings. In a single-layer winding, only one coil side is placed in one slot, while in a double-layer winding, two coil sides are placed in one slot. Single-layer windings mainly include lap windings, concentric windings, chain windings, and cross-chain windings. Single-layer windings are mainly used in small and medium-sized motors.

Concentric windings are composed of coils of different sizes with overlapping center lines forming a "回" (hui) shaped coil, hence the name "concentric windings." They feature layered arrangement at the ends for easy winding, but have relatively high magnetic leakage at the ends. Chain windings are named for their chain-like appearance when unfolded. Crossed windings are characterized by unequal numbers of coils in adjacent coil groups and can be either stacked crossed windings or concentric crossed windings.

Differences and similarities between electric motors and generators

Both have the same structure and component connection method, with each component forming a circuit in series. Both are affected by the direction of the magnetic field; the direction of the current generated in a generator is related to the direction of the magnetic field, and the direction of the force on the coil in a motor is related to the direction of the magnetic field. However, their principles, methods of judgment, working purposes, and energy conversions differ.

● Their working principles are different. First, a generator is made based on the phenomenon of electromagnetic induction, while a motor is made based on the principle of motion of a current-carrying conductor in a magnetic field.

● Both electric motors and generators are composed of magnets, coils, commutators, brushes, etc., and the way their components are connected is basically the same.

● Both electric motors and generators contain magnets, so both are affected by the direction of the magnetic field. The direction of the current is also related to the direction of the magnetic field. Therefore, the direction of the force on the coils in electric motors and generators is related to the direction of the magnetic field.

●The purpose of the work and the energy conversion are different. Generators generally need to do work on the outside to convert mechanical energy into electrical energy, while motors do the opposite, need to do work on the outside to convert electrical energy into mechanical energy.
