Sungrow Power: 1500V Reduces System Costs and Facilitates Grid Parity

Recently, He Zhili, Solutions Manager of Sungrow Power Supply Co., Ltd., stated at the 2019 Photovoltaic Transformation Forum and the 6th Guangdong Photovoltaic Forum that 1500V systems are the future development trend, enabling the series connection of a larger number of modules and saving on system costs such as cables, supports, and foundation piles. In the Datong Top Runner project, one of the first large-scale applications of 1500V systems in China, Sungrow has reduced costs by approximately RMB 0.1 /Wp and increased power generation by approximately 1%-2%.

According to Bloomberg's forecast, the cost of photovoltaic (PV) power generation in China will be on par with coal-fired power in 2022, ushering in the era of grid parity. He Zhili pointed out that the continuous decline in global PV electricity prices is an inevitable trend. In GW-scale projects in the Middle East, where there is abundant sunshine and low land costs, bidding prices have repeatedly broken global records for lowest prices. Meanwhile, domestically, Sungrow Power's participation in the 2018 Golmud Top Runner Project in Qinghai Province set a precedent for grid parity for PV power in China, achieving a feed-in tariff of 0.31 yuan/kWh, lower than the local desulfurized coal-fired power price.

For domestic grid parity projects, Sungrow Power Supply Co., Ltd., based on the concept of "scientific design adapted to local conditions," provides 1500V system solutions suitable for complex terrain, flat ground, or water surfaces. Combined with large-capacity arrays and high capacity ratio designs, these solutions can save system costs, improve power generation revenue, and further reduce the levelized cost of electricity (LCOE). In regions like Europe and America, mainstream array capacities have increased to over 6MW. In India and Vietnam, the capacity of individual sub-arrays in photovoltaic power plants has also shifted from 6.25MW to 12.5MW , generally based on over-sizing designs of 1.4 times or more.

Furthermore, with the advent of the grid parity era, the installed capacity of new energy sources will continue to rise, but the characteristics such as intermittent fluctuations in power output will still exist. At the same time, the focus will shift from adapting to the grid to supporting the grid. Therefore, it is necessary to install energy storage to enhance grid friendliness, ensure the synergy between renewable energy and other energy sources, and increase the proportion of clean energy.
