What is an intelligent manufacturing system?
With the advent of Industry 4.0, systematization, digitalization, intelligence, and datafication have become the general direction of transformation in China's manufacturing industry. Intelligent manufacturing systems deeply integrate new technologies such as the Internet, cloud computing, big data, and mobile applications with product production management. By using computers to simulate the intelligent activities of human experts in analysis, reasoning, judgment, conceptualization, and decision-making, they replace or extend some of the mental labor of humans in the manufacturing environment, achieving innovative changes in production models and providing customers with factory visualization and remote operation and maintenance solutions.
What are the characteristics of intelligent manufacturing systems?
1. Self-discipline ability
This refers to the system's ability to collect and understand environmental and self-information, and to analyze, judge, and plan its own behavior based on this information. "Intelligent machines" exhibit independence, autonomy, and individuality to some extent, and can even coordinate and compete with each other.
2. Human-machine integration
Artificial intelligence-based intelligent machines can only perform mechanical inferences and predictions; they can only possess logical thinking (expert systems) and at most visual thinking (neural networks), completely lacking intuitive thinking. Only human experts truly possess all three types of thinking abilities simultaneously. Human-machine integration, on the one hand, emphasizes the central role of humans in the manufacturing system, and on the other hand, with the cooperation of intelligent machines, better unleashes human potential, enabling humans and machines to exhibit an equal, mutually understanding, and collaborative relationship, allowing each to demonstrate its capabilities at different levels and complement each other.
3. Virtual Reality Technology
Simulating the manufacturing process and the expected product allows people to intuitively experience a feeling completely identical to the real thing. Moreover, it can be modified according to people's needs and desires. This new generation of intelligent interfaces that combine humans and machines is a significant feature of intelligent manufacturing.
4. Self-organization and ultra-flexibility
Each component in an intelligent manufacturing system can perform specific tasks according to the needs of the work assignment. Its flexibility is not only reflected in its operation mode, but also in its structural form, hence this flexibility is called ultra-flexible.
How to choose an intelligent manufacturing system?
Due to significant differences in product manufacturing processes, discrete manufacturing and process manufacturing have different focuses in building smart factories.
In discrete manufacturing, products are often assembled from multiple parts through a series of discontinuous processes. These processes involve many variations and uncertainties, which increases the difficulty and complexity of organizing discrete manufacturing production. Companies often arrange the location of production equipment according to the main technological flow to minimize material transport distances.
Discrete manufacturing enterprises that are order-oriented are characterized by a wide variety of products and small batches. Their process routes and equipment usage are more flexible. Therefore, discrete manufacturing enterprises pay more attention to the flexibility of production, and the focus of their smart factory construction is on smart manufacturing production lines.
