Drive shaft, a magical iron rod!

The driveshaft of a car is primarily a metal shaft, but we must not think that the driveshaft is simply a metal rod connected to the wheels.

The primary function of a driveshaft is to transmit power. For example, the driveshaft transfers the rolling motion of the gearbox to the main reducer. It is connected by a universal joint. As a high-speed rotating body with few supports, the driveshaft itself needs to take into account its balance. Therefore, before production and leaving the factory, a series of balance tests and balance experiments are often carried out, and adjustments are made on a balancing machine.

A car's driveshaft primarily consists of three parts: the shaft tube, the telescopic sleeve, and the universal joint. Various car accessories are mounted and connected to the driveshaft, and it maintains a high-speed rotating motion during vehicle movement. Therefore, driveshafts are often made of lightweight alloy materials with excellent torsional resistance.

The most important component of the driveshaft is the universal joint. The installation position of the universal joint varies from car to car. For example, in a front-engine, rear-wheel-drive car, the universal joint is installed between the output shaft of the transmission and the input shaft of the final drive; while in a front-engine, front-wheel-drive car, due to the characteristics of the car, the engine and drive wheels are located at the front of the car, so there is no need to use a driveshaft. Therefore, the universal joint of this type of car is installed between the front axle half-shaft and the wheel.

During driving, cars inevitably encounter various rough and uneven road conditions, causing the car to bounce and thus changing the load. Consequently, the angle and distance between the transmission output shaft and the final drive input shaft will change accordingly. The universal joint of the drive shaft was developed to solve this problem.

The universal joint on the primary drive shaft ensures reliable power transmission even when the relative positions of the transmission output shaft and the final drive input shaft change (within a certain range) under these road conditions. Secondly, the universal joint allows the two shafts to rotate evenly. Finally, the universal joint ensures that the included angle between the two shafts changes, enabling them to perform constant angular velocity transmission.

If the driveshaft components in our car are damaged or out of balance, the car will produce some abnormal vibrations and noises when driving normally. For example, a "clunking" sound when starting, or a "humming" sound from the chassis when driving normally. Moreover, the sound becomes louder as the speed increases. These are all caused by problems with the car's driveshaft.

If you encounter these problems, you should hurry to a repair shop and have a professional mechanic take a look.

Therefore, in order to avoid frequent trips to the repair shop, we must know how to ensure that our drive shaft can perform its function properly and at the same time extend its service life as much as possible.

1. After pressing the clutch pedal, be careful not to release it abruptly.

2. Overloading and speeding in a car can also damage the drive shaft.

3. Do not use high gears to start; develop good driving habits.

4. The drive shaft should be inspected regularly to check for deformation and loose connections.
