HARTING MICA® enables encrypted connections between mobile phones and armored trucks.
Robbery protection / seamless vehicle tracking

Espercamp, March 27 , 2020 -- A leading European manufacturer of armored cash transport vehicles is enabling remote access to its vehicles via mobile cellular networks using MICA® wireless edge computers and Infotecs encryption technology.

Millions of euros in cash are transported by road every day. Armored trucks appear to be obvious targets for robberies, thus requiring relevant agencies to provide appropriate protection for these vehicles. In addition to bulletproof armor, maintaining an uninterrupted, tap-to-verify connection with the vehicle is also a crucial protective measure. Because the vehicles are constantly moving between different mobile service providers' cells, the special vehicle manufacturer ultimately decided to adopt a solution provided by Infotecs . This solution combines the ViPNet encryption software with the HARTING robust MICA® edge computer, providing the vehicle with a wireless gateway.

With ViPNet's software-defined VPN solution's always-on capability, vehicles can be accessed anytime via an encrypted mobile cellular connection. Other VPN solutions, however, require re-establishing a secure connection every time the connection is interrupted or when switching mobile service providers' networks.

Encrypted, always-on mobile connectivity also opens up new possibilities for vehicle monitoring. Since GPS tracking of vehicles is not always feasible (e.g., when traveling in tunnels), operators have now enabled seamless vehicle tracking. The use of mobile cellular networks also allows for vehicle tracking in tunnels, thus significantly enhancing the security of cash transport companies.

The MICA® wireless computer comes with an E-SIM card provided by EMnify and is permanently installed in the corresponding vehicle. Because EMnify offers global roaming services, vehicles used in different countries do not require separate mobile contracts with each country's mobile operators. The MICA® hardware can also transmit vehicle manufacturer-specific bus system telemetry data and perform data evaluations for purposes such as predictive maintenance analysis. This allows for proactive prevention of vehicle malfunctions. Furthermore, Infotecs solutions have extremely low data transmission latency, enabling easy and direct remote software updates to be installed in the vehicle.
