How to return a rotary encoder to zero?

Machine tool homing is the most common operation procedure for machine tool operators. For machine tools equipped with incremental encoders, homing is actually the process by which the incremental encoder first collides with a stop block and then finds its zero point. This homing includes both the axis returning to the machine tool's zero position and defining the machine tool's zero position. Because absolute encoders and incremental encoders operate on different principles, after Siemens absolute encoders are debugged, the zero positions of the machine tool and encoder are already defined, and the defined zero point will not disappear due to power failure. Generally, homing is not required. Therefore, the so-called "homing" of an absolute encoder only means the axis returning to the machine tool's zero position.

For some machine tools, both incremental and absolute encoder axes are present. Customers are accustomed to pressing the zero-return key to return each axis, including the absolute encoder axis, to zero when operating the machine tool. This article focuses on explaining the "zero-return operation" setting for absolute encoders , i.e., how to achieve a manual zero-return operation similar to that of incremental encoders. Generally, there are two scenarios:

1. System zeroing interface: Customers manually press the positive zeroing key for each axis one by one to return to zero.

At this point, for axes equipped with absolute encoders, the axis parameter 34330 can be set to 0 without changing the PLC settings. The axis can be manually returned to zero by pressing the positive zero return key.

2. System zeroing interface: When the customer presses the NC start button, each axis will automatically return to zero.

At this point, for axes equipped with absolute encoders, in addition to setting axis parameter 34330 to 0, 11300 also needs to be set to 0. Then, add the following program segment to the PLC (taking 828D as an example). The zero-return sequence can be set by parameters MD34110[Z]=1 , MD34110[X]=2 , and MD34110[Y]=3 . In reference point mode, pressing the cycle start key will automatically return the axis to zero.
