50 Tips for Integrating Human-Machine Interface Software and Hardware

2026-04-06 05:46:15 · · #1

CONTROL ENGINEERING recently conducted a survey on Human-Machine Interface ( HMI ) software and hardware. Respondents recommended the following in their responses: Before using an HMI , the software should be pre-installed; standards should be followed; training planning should be collaborative; flexibility and ease of use should be considered; and the timing of implementation should be carefully considered. They also advised paying attention to lengthy warnings, including cybersecurity updates.

A survey conducted by CONTROL ENGINEERING on "Human Machine Interface ( HMI ) Software and Hardware" revealed that cybersecurity was one of the key concerns raised by many respondents. Recommendations included purchasing hardware with pre-integrated software, adhering to standards, and providing relevant training.

Of the users who participated in this " HMI Software and Hardware" survey, more than 75 provided written suggestions, which are summarized into the following five aspects for easier analysis: integration and standardization, testing, experience, flexibility and ease of use, cybersecurity, and implementation progress.

Integration and Standardization

Purchase integrated hardware and software; simple combinations usually don't work.

◈In the event of an operating system crash, integrated systems are more secure in terms of networking and are more robust.

◈ If possible, integrate the system and purchase software and hardware from as few vendors as possible.

◈ Develop standardized templates to reduce development costs.

◈ Don't take risks for technology. If possible, choose integrated software and hardware from suppliers or original equipment manufacturers.

◈ Ensure it is easy to integrate with industrial control system software.

◈Find and stick with HMI hardware and software that are easy to interface with a programmable logic controller ( PLC ) .

◈ Implementing human-computer interface software and hardware in an integrated manner is a practical suggestion, and sometimes it is easier to achieve.

◈Uphold open protocols and standards.

◈Understanding the basics of HMI hardware and software integration is beneficial. Understanding protocols, I/O requirements, and machine range will help in selecting compatible products for integration. Good technical support is also crucial.

◈ Ensure the integrator provides all source code and passwords.

◈ Ensure they have the control drivers you need. The next step is the customer-customized application.

◈ Select applicable standards before procurement and implementation.

◈ Seeking low-cost, interoperable HMI solutions.

◈ Partner with experienced integrators.

◈Integrate everything in the same workshop, and then test the system communications and other parts before shipping to the field.

Project Testing

◈ Test communication settings as early as possible. The later you do it, the more difficult it will become.

◈ The cost of implementing HMI software and hardware is often higher than expected.

◈ Maintain consistency between the design software and runtime software versions.

◈ Test and communicate with the manufacturing application engineering team, not just the sales staff.

◈ Test all possible scenarios, especially environmental testing.

◈The software and hardware product lines must remain commercially operational for the next 6 or 7 years.

◈If possible, try it before you buy. Some software programs are easier to use than others.

◈ Only purchase products from suppliers that have been tested and trusted.

Customization capabilities are very important, as is the ability to use graphics libraries obtained from other sources, such as obtaining a managed .NET network framework from a third party.

Implementation experience

◈ Coordinate existing infrastructure or plans before making a purchase.

◈Consider all options and operating requirements. Don't go overboard.

◈ Ensure that suppliers have knowledgeable technical and professional personnel.

◈ Choose a screen size, memory, or other attributes that are one size larger than you expect.

HMI hardware can be based on a control center (regional control center, using existing PCs and monitors) or on-site, depending on different standards (temperature range, display units, etc.).

◈ Include the image conversion project in the run. Run ownership is crucial for the success of the upgrade project.

◈ Show the system to end users during the concept and design phases.

◈ Review the brand's expertise and tools.
