Pilz: Is the safety locking function of the protective device necessary?

Is a security lock necessary?

If the interlocking device does not have a locking function, the operating logic of the machine's hazardous actuator is relatively simple: when the protective device is closed, the machine is allowed to start; when the protective device is open, the machine stops. However, when selecting this type of switch, it is essential to ensure that the system's stopping time is less than the time required for personnel to enter the hazardous area. Therefore, the overall system shutdown performance is a factor influencing whether a locking protective device is necessary.

The new standard explicitly incorporates the reference to EN ISO 13855 regarding "positioning of safety devices related to human approach speed" into the requirements related to interlocking switches. If the time required for the system to stop is longer than the time required for personnel to enter the hazardous area, an interlocking device with protective locking function must be used!

In practical applications, besides the potential dangers to personnel posed by the motion mechanism, it is also necessary to prevent abnormal interruptions in the process flow, equipment damage, or product scrapping caused by human error or external shocks. Using interlocking devices with protective locking functions can effectively avoid various accidents and is a wiser choice.

Guard Locking offers two protection locking methods.

Unconditional unlock

The operator can unlock the device at any time. Once unlocking is initiated, the protective locking device will generate a stop command. The time required to unlock the protective device should be greater than the time required for the dangerous machine function to disappear.

Conditional unlock

The protective device can only be unlocked when the dangerous machine's function is no longer active. Therefore, a stationary monitoring module or speed monitoring module is required to determine whether the machine is stationary before the mechanism that drives the protective device to unlock officially takes effect.

Pilz offers security door systems suitable for various applications and requirements, helping users achieve secure locking.

PSENme5

The new series of mechanical security door systems offers an economical solution.

PSENslock

Non-contact safety door systems can be used for process protection, with a maximum safety level of PLe and an electromagnetic locking force of 500N/1000N . RFID -based coded safety door systems feature four LED indicators for diagnostics.

PSENmlock

Modular safety door systems can be used for personnel and process protection, with safety interlocks and protective locking up to PL e/SIL CL 3 and a maximum locking force of 7500 N. This RFID - based coded safety door system features LED indicators on three sides for diagnostics. Its compact design fits all 40mm profiles and boasts a robust housing. The flexible operating head allows for high tolerance compensation and is suitable for doors with settling. The locking circuit utilizes bistable magnets, resulting in high energy efficiency. Optional escape device accessories can be added, and it can be integrated with PITgatebox , SDD , and other systems to create customized safety door systems.

PSENsgate

This integrated security door monitoring solution combines security door interlocks, security locks, latches, operating elements, escape release mechanisms, and emergency stop buttons. The security interlocks and security locks meet PL e / SIL CL 3 standards , with a locking force of 2000N . Assembly is simple; it can be configured for either left or right opening and is suitable for all 45mm wide profiles.

Products with different locking force levels meet the requirements of the maximum static force for opening doors under different human postures in Annex 14119 of ISO 14119.

The standard also requires that, if entry is foreseeably necessary in an emergency, "spring-loaded release" or "power-loaded release" systems should be equipped with a protective locking device with an emergency release mechanism to prevent people from being trapped inside the protective fence and to address the need for unlocking in unforeseen circumstances. Therefore, our security door system offers a variety of escape release and emergency release accessories, enabling unlocking from either the inside or outside of the protected area.
