For many years, ECI and EQI absolute induction rotary encoders have been widely used in servo motors due to their robustness, durability, and reliable operation, consistently maintaining a leading position. The new generation of rotary encoders utilizes a new composite motor cable, simplifying cable connections: the HMC 2 single-cable solution includes both encoder and power cables, making cable connection even simpler. This solution also incorporates the necessary next-generation EnDat interface.
High value-added rotary encoder
The ECI 1119 and ECI 1319 (single-turn) are bearingless inductive rotary encoders, while the EQI 1131 and EQI 1331 (multi-turn) are Heidenhain's first encoders with optimized design and HMC 2 composite cable. These encoders offer excellent control quality and system accuracy: the 65 mm diameter 1300 series encoders achieve an accuracy of ±65 arcseconds, and the 37 mm diameter 1100 series encoders achieve an accuracy of ±120 arcseconds. They can withstand vibrations up to 600 m/s² , and their robustness surpasses that of optical scanning encoders. They also exhibit excellent resistance to electromagnetic radiation. Due to their bearingless design, these encoders require minimal axial space within compact servo motors.
The new rotary encoders offer safety levels up to SIL 2 or Class 3 PL d . With additional measures within the control system, SIL 3 or Class 4 PL e can be achieved . A key advantage is mechanical anti-loosening, preventing the connection between the connecting shaft and the stator from becoming loose. This safety feature allows these inductive rotary encoders to be used even in human-machine collaborative systems.
A key highlight of the new rotary encoder is its compatibility with the new HMC 2 composite motor cable. Heidenhain encoders provide all the necessary information for initial setup, monitoring, and diagnostics, including electronic ID tags, encoder installation quality information, and encoder alignment with the motor commutator. Motor temperature sensor characteristic curves and temperature alarm thresholds can also be configured. The new composite cable offers purely digital, high-speed data transmission with high reliability. Furthermore, standardized connectors effectively simplify cable connections and reduce costs.
HMC 2 : One cable, one connector, transmits all data.
The HMC 2 composite motor cable combines the encoder cable and power cable. Therefore, only a single cable is needed to connect the motor to the electrical cabinet, requiring only standard M12 or M23 connectors. This simplifies cable connections and the connection between the cable and the machine housing. Advantages also include the availability of smaller cable chains and greater chain adaptability. The HMC 2 uses standard connectors, eliminating the need for additional shielded communication connectors, thus significantly reducing costs compared to the previous HMC 6 motor cable.
The new HMC 2 single-cable solution is specifically designed for Heidenhain encoders with EnDat 3 interfaces, transmitting data serially with cable lengths up to 100 m . Mature, reliable, and compatible connector, cable, and encoder technologies create an ideal and easy-to-use complete system for drive systems. It particularly meets the stringent requirements of robotics and automation applications for compact, cost-effective, and high-performance connection cables.
EnDat 3 : Meeting the Requirements of Future Digital Production
EnDat is Heidenhain's bidirectional interface for digital drive systems and position control loops with position feedback encoders. Since its introduction in the 1990s , this interface has been widely used in position encoders in the machine tool, electronics, and automation industries, becoming a global standard. EnDat ensures high-speed and reliable data transmission. This serial interface can also transmit additional data, such as motor parameters and sensor information. Extensive encoder diagnostic functions and troubleshooting procedures effectively improve system reliability. Equipment and automation system manufacturers offer a wide variety of encoders with different measurement principles and specifications. Therefore, users can always find a suitable EnDat encoder to meet their specific application requirements.
The EnDat 3 next-generation interface faithfully inherits the functional characteristics of the EnDat interface, meeting the requirements of future industrial production. This new generation interface inherits the legendary reliability and operating characteristics of this series, meeting the demands of future digital production while providing more data and functionality for installation, such as send lists, bus topology, and access permission functions. EnDat can provide information from the electronic ID tag to the encoder and the entire system. Therefore, OEMs and automation system manufacturers can store system parameters in the encoder's password-protected storage area. During normal operation, operational status data, such as system or process conditions, can also be stored in the encoder, and any control system can read this data.
EnDat offers a wealth of encoder monitoring and diagnostic functions without requiring additional wiring. Its diagnostic functions generate valid data, error messages, and alarm information, crucial for achieving high system availability. Valid data provides information about the encoder's current status and functional redundancy. These numbers are scaled identically across all Heidenhain encoders, allowing for unified analysis. Functional redundancy, combined with data from other sensors, provides the foundation for condition monitoring and preventative maintenance of higher-level, downstream electronic circuitry.
