Whether it's smartphones, smart home appliances, modern medical equipment, or automotive electronics, printed circuit boards (PCBs) are increasingly becoming a part of the electronic products behind the scenes.

As the foundation and core of most electronic products today, PCBs are used in almost every industry. During the production and use of PCBs, they often need to be transported by conveyor devices to downstream equipment such as placement machines for further processing.

With the increasing number of PCBs being processed, traditional manual PCB inspection methods are costly and time-consuming, and have fallen behind the requirements of modern industrial production. Therefore, how to quickly and reliably inspect the PCBs during electronic surface mount and assembly production has become an automation challenge.

In this field, Baumer, a global expert in sensor automation technology, is helping more and more electronic assembly plants improve their inspection efficiency and quality with its miniature optoelectronic sensor solutions.

PCB board inspection challenges

In electronic assembly, PCB boards often need to be transported to designated positions in downstream processes (such as pick-and-place machines). The accuracy of this positioning directly affects the quality of the entire downstream assembly process, and consequently, the quality stability of the final PCB circuit board. Furthermore, accurate counting of PCB boards is required during processing to meet production management requirements.

Photoelectric sensors can address the requirements for automated counting and positioning during PCB board conveying, improving the efficiency and quality stability of the entire production process while reducing production costs. However, photoelectric detection technology still faces some challenges in PCB board inspection.

Firstly, the detection results of ordinary dot-spot photoelectric sensors are affected by the different materials on the PCB board surface, especially when encountering perforated or highly glossy objects, where the sensor signal is easily lost. In other words, when detecting PCB boards with cutouts, the light source of ordinary dot-spot sensors may penetrate the PCB, causing the beam to not reach the workpiece and resulting in missed detection; or when the beam hits the PCB board with uneven surfaces due to soldered parts, it will result in multiple signal outputs.

Secondly, installation needs to be considered. Choosing sensors that are easy to install and have a small size is obviously more beneficial for on-site installation and use.

Unaffected

By utilizing the photoelectric sensor technology of linear array light spots, a wider area can be covered by a long beam of light. As long as part of the light spot hits the PCB, a stable feedback signal can be obtained to determine the presence of the object being tested in the detection area.

Baumer's O200 series sensors, featuring linear beams, are among the best in this category of photoelectric sensors. These miniature photoelectric sensors with an IO-Link interface are ideal for detecting difficult-to-measure objects in confined spaces. They offer unparalleled immunity to ambient light interference, provide accurate measurement results, and their sensing distance is unaffected by object color, ensuring absolute reliability even in demanding applications. The O200.GP, suitable for PCB board inspection, provides stable and reliable PCB board position information via a linear beam, completely unaffected by surface materials or holes/gaps.

Under the same casing, the O200 series also offers products with various sensing principles such as background suppression, specular reflection, through-beam, and intelligent reflection, suitable for PCBs with complex colors or PCBs with uneven soldered parts.

In addition, thanks to its tiny housing size of 8mm*25.1mm*15.8mm, the O200.GP is also suitable for applications with limited installation space.
