Now, the car company founded by Elon Musk is injecting energy into another, less glamorous but more important field: the data center sector.

Among the customers who have already validated Tesla’s battery innovation is Amazon Web Services (AWS), whose founder and CEO Jeff Bezos recently stated that it will become a $5 billion business.

Tesla describes itself as "more than just a car company" but an "energy innovation company," demonstrating how to apply the same systems and components used in electric vehicles to energy storage systems. In other words, Tesla is testing the combination of battery technology and thermal management and control technology to create critical systems.

"Tesla's energy storage allows the company to store excess energy generated by its solar arrays for later use, fully utilizing the potential of solar energy and making it readily available," said Palo Alto, a company headquartered in California. The company added, "By storing energy and using it when energy consumption is highest, the company can reduce its energy costs."

James Hamilton, a distinguished engineer at AWS, revealed that Tesla has been testing and running applications based on high-performance battery technology for over a year. Hamilton explained that this energy-efficient approach can encourage "the widespread adoption of renewable energy in the grid."

In a prepared statement, Hamilton said, "Batteries are critical to the reliability of data centers, and also critical to driving the effective use of renewable energy." He added, "They help bridge the gap between intermittent energy production (such as wind power) and the stable power demands of data centers."

AWS plans to launch an experimental Tesla energy storage battery with a capacity of 4.8 megawatts per hour, starting in the western United States (Northern California). AWS has four regions in the U.S. (including one focused on government applications) and more around the world. Hamilton pledged that these actions align with Amazon's long-term strategy and will be rolled out gradually, ultimately using 100% renewable energy in its global infrastructure.
