Hydrogen fuel cell vehicles, now on the fast track, still need to break through their "upper limits".

2017 is considered the first year of industrialization for fuel cell vehicles in my country.

The gradual phasing out of subsidies for new energy vehicles has caused anxiety in the industry, making hydrogen fuel a highly sought-after option among new energy sources. The current consensus within the automotive industry is that future vehicle power sources will be diverse, with hydrogen energy becoming a crucial component. "By 2030, the output value of my country's hydrogen energy vehicle industry is expected to exceed one trillion yuan," predicted Fu Yuwu, Chairman of the China Society of Automotive Engineers.

Among numerous alternative new energy sources, hydrogen energy is undoubtedly the first choice. Hydrogen fuel cell vehicles refer to cars that use hydrogen as their primary energy source for mobility, and they have significant advantages compared to current lithium-ion battery electric vehicles. Theoretically, compared to the potential pollution in battery production for pure electric vehicles, hydrogen energy is currently the most environmentally friendly clean energy source among new energy vehicles worldwide. Compared to the limitations of conventional electric vehicles in terms of battery energy storage, charging time, and driving range, current data shows that hydrogen fuel cell vehicles can achieve a driving range of 500 to 600 kilometers, and refueling only takes 3 minutes.

This has led many industry insiders to believe that the development of hydrogen fuel will be a crucial direction for new energy. After more than 20 years of research and development and testing, my country's hydrogen fuel cell vehicles are now entering the commercialization and promotion stage, and will undoubtedly become a blue ocean in the new energy vehicle industry in the future. Currently, upstream water electrolysis hydrogen production technology, midstream chemical hydrogen storage technology, and downstream fuel cell applications in vehicles and distributed power generation are widely viewed favorably. The "Energy Saving and New Energy Vehicle Technology Roadmap" published in 2016 clearly stated that the development targets for fuel cell vehicles in China are 5,000 vehicles in 2020, 50,000 vehicles in 2025, and one million vehicles in 2030.

According to a previous Xinhua News Agency report, the "Blue Book on the Development of Hydrogen Energy Industry Infrastructure in China (2016)" predicts that by 2020, my country will have 10,000 fuel cell vehicles, and by 2030, the number of fuel cell vehicles will reach 2 million. At that time, China is expected to become the world's largest fuel cell vehicle market. According to incomplete statistics, automakers such as Toyota, Hyundai, SAIC Maxus, Yutong Bus, Zhongtong Bus, BYD, King Long Motors, BAIC Group, and Foton Motor have long been involved in research and development in the field of hydrogen fuel cells.

In terms of policy support, fuel cell vehicles are the only type of new energy vehicle for which government subsidies are not reduced and there are no restrictions on the maximum proportion of local subsidies. In the adjusted new energy vehicle subsidy policy of 2016, the subsidy for hydrogen fuel cell buses remains unchanged at 300,000 yuan per light bus and 500,000 yuan per large and medium-sized bus. Regarding the construction of hydrogen refueling stations, the government provides a reward of 4 million yuan per station that meets the standards. Meanwhile, in October, my country announced eight standards in the field of hydrogen energy. These eight standards cover regulations for hydrogen refueling stations, hydrogen storage, and other aspects, with safety playing a crucial role in all of them.

China's focus in developing hydrogen fuel cell vehicles lies in reducing vehicle costs and building hydrogen refueling stations. However, the factors that have long hindered the commercialization of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles seem to have remained largely unchanged. The commercialization of fuel cell vehicles still faces challenges such as breakthroughs in core technologies and the cultivation and expansion of the industrial chain. Especially given the scarcity of hydrogen refueling stations and the lack of完善的technical specifications and standards, the promotion and popularization of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles will face numerous challenges. Whether it's an electric vehicle or a hydrogen fuel cell vehicle, the most pressing issue is how to refuel.

Compared to the decades-long infrastructure development of traditional gas stations, hydrogen refueling stations are remarkably scarce, currently only available in cities like Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen, Zhengzhou, Dalian, Yunfu, and Foshan. Industry experts estimate that achieving full commercialization of the hydrogen fuel cell vehicle market will take approximately three years. Currently, hydrogen fuel cell vehicles have passed the technology development stage and have already entered the early stages of commercialization in countries like the US and Japan, while my country is in the market introduction phase.

Furthermore, policy support will accelerate the commercialization of fuel cells, and hydrogen fuel cell vehicles are expected to become the next big trend. The pace of technological innovation in fuel cells has exceeded market expectations, and with the recent proposal of a timetable for banning the sale of gasoline-powered vehicles, the industry's development is timely, and market potential is expected to expand.
