What are the different manufacturing processes for lithium batteries?

1. Slurry mixing is a crucial step in lithium-ion battery equipment. The positive electrode slurry of a lithium-ion battery consists of binders, conductive agents, and positive electrode materials, while the negative electrode slurry consists of binders and graphite carbon powder. The preparation of both positive and negative electrode slurries involves the mixing, dissolution, and dispersion of liquids with each other and liquids with solids. The quality of slurry dispersion directly affects the quality and performance of the lithium-ion battery.

2. Coating determines the consistency and quality of the battery and plays a crucial technical role in battery manufacturing. Regardless of the type of battery produced (e.g., cylindrical or prismatic), the coating machine used in manufacturing is the same; different types of batteries require different types of winding machines.

3. In addition to lithium-ion battery winding machines, there are also capacitor winding machines, textile winding machines, etc. According to their operating methods, they can be divided into manual winding machines, semi-automatic winding machines, and fully automatic winding machines.

4. The importance of testing items is becoming increasingly prominent. Lithium-ion batteries are prone to burning or exploding due to short circuits, overcharging, etc. In applications, they are combined with protection boards to form finished batteries; in applications with high energy density, lithium-ion batteries need to be connected in series and parallel to form lithium-ion battery packs, which are managed by a battery management system (BMS).

As can be seen, the lithium-ion battery manufacturing process is quite long, involving more than 50 steps and requiring more than 50 types of equipment. The entire manufacturing process can be divided into four stages: electrode fabrication, cell assembly, cell activation and testing, and battery packaging. Among them, the equipment related to electrode fabrication is called front-end equipment, the equipment related to cell fabrication is mid-end equipment, and the equipment for cell activation and testing and battery packaging is back-end equipment.

In recent years, lithium-ion battery production has been developing towards integration, full-line production, and automation. Automated lithium battery production lines supply customers with standardized products, and traditional development methods cannot meet the rapidly changing needs of customers.

The quality of lithium-ion batteries is of paramount importance. Currently, the main problem in the industrialization of lithium-ion batteries in China is poor battery quality consistency. This is largely due to manual operation, poor equipment precision leading to large system errors, and the inability to maintain continuous production. To fundamentally solve the problem of poor batch production quality consistency of lithium-ion batteries, it is necessary to improve the control precision of production equipment and the level of automation in production lines.
