May 13, 2022 — On Semiconductor (Nasdaq: ON), a leader in smart power and smart sensing technologies, introduced a new three-piece set of products for USB Power over USB (PD) designs. The new controller and driver offer innovative features that significantly reduce the bill of materials (BOM) content of high-efficiency AC-DC power supplies, especially at loads above 100 W.
Shane Chilton, Senior Director of ON Semiconductor's Power Conversion Solutions Division, said, "USB PD is an important and growing application, but meeting its energy efficiency and size requirements is a significant challenge for designers. With our new product, designers can eliminate up to 15 components from their existing BOM, reducing design costs while ensuring compliance with the stringent energy efficiency and performance standards for USB PD applications."
The NCP1345 is a quasi-resonant (QR) flyback controller for high-performance offline power supplies and USB Type-C PD fast charging. High-frequency QR operation (up to 350 kHz) allows for smaller magnetic components. Thanks to its built-in constant output current limiter, the NCP1345 is compatible with limited power supplies (LPS) requirements, while its fast frequency runback ensures excellent light-load efficiency.
ON Semiconductor's other new product, the NCP1623, is a small-size boost power factor correction (PFC) controller rated at 300 W, used in USB PD fast charging adapters and computer power supplies. This device operates in critical conduction mode (CrM) under heavy loads and then transitions to discontinuous conduction mode (DCM) as the load decreases, maximizing efficiency under both rated and light loads. The NCP1623 achieves up to 2% efficiency at low input voltages, consumes <100 μA in sleep mode, and optimizes no-load input power states.
The NCP4307 is a high-performance driver that can be used with synchronous rectified (SR) MOSFETs in a variety of high-performance switching power supply topologies. The device is self-powered from an internal 200 VCS pin, enabling high-bridge configuration and low VOUT without requiring an auxiliary power supply. Dual VCC pins select the optimal VCC source to minimize losses, thus optimizing designs for wide-range VOUT applications.
