What are the causes of short circuits in power transformers?

Power transformers are frequently used in daily life. To ensure normal power supply, the safe and stable operation of power transformers is of paramount importance. Once a transformer malfunctions, the cause must be identified and addressed immediately. For example, a transformer short circuit can cause significant harm if not dealt with promptly, seriously affecting the safe operation of the power grid. What are the causes of transformer short circuits? Below, we will introduce them in detail.

The causes of short circuits in power transformers are as follows:

1. Frequent external short circuits in power transformers, and the cumulative effect of electrostatic force after multiple short circuit current surges, cause the electromagnetic wires to soften or internal relative displacement, resulting in insulation breakdown.

2. Excessive gaps in the power transformer assembly can compromise the stability of the electromagnetic wires, thus compromising the transformer's short-circuit withstand capability.

3. Improper control of the preload of the power transformer windings causes misalignment of the conductors in the normally transposed conductors.

4. Uneven preload on each winding or span of the power transformer can cause the coil to jump during a short circuit, resulting in excessive bending stress on the electromagnetic wire and deformation.

5. The power transformer windings are too loose, the transposition or correction ramping is not handled properly, and they are too thin, causing the electromagnetic wires to be suspended. Judging from the location of the damage, the deformation is mostly seen at the transposition points, especially at the transposition points of the transposition conductors.
