Japan has developed a new technology that could triple the charging speed of lithium batteries.

A recent study from Japan appears poised to end the long-standing reliance on electrolytes to power lithium-ion batteries. According to a joint effort by the University of Tokyo's Faculty of Engineering and the National Institute for Materials Science, Japan, they have discovered a novel electrolyte that grants lithium-ion batteries exceptional reactivity and resistance to degradation. With further development, this new technology could significantly enhance the overall performance of current lithium-ion batteries.

Typically, the final concentration of an electrolyte is determined by its high concentration and resistance to degradation. However, Japanese researchers have discovered a method that involves adding a mixed solvent, which can increase the electrolyte concentration to four times that of current lithium-ion battery technology. The primary component of this solvent incorporated into the lithium-ion battery electrolyte will be ethylene carbonate.

The new hybrid solution allows lithium batteries to charge faster and supply more power per unit time through physical methods. Specifically, this new research can improve the charging time of lithium batteries by 300% while essentially maintaining the rated voltage of 3V to 5V.

While this new lithium-ion battery technology could significantly improve the charging speed of our phones and tablets in the future, the actual purpose of this research is to focus on the electric vehicle sector. If charging speed can be increased by more than three times, it would effectively solve the problem of excessively long charging times for electric vehicles. Of course, this new battery technology still has room for further improvement and may have a significant impact on lithium-ion batteries, which have long lacked significant progress.
