So what are the advantages and disadvantages of batteries made from materials such as lithium cobalt oxide, lithium manganese oxide, lithium nickel oxide, ternary materials, and lithium iron phosphate?
1. Lithium cobalt oxide battery
Advantages: Lithium cobalt oxide has advantages such as high discharge platform, high specific capacity, good cycle performance, and simple synthesis process.
Disadvantages: Lithium cobalt oxide contains cobalt, an element that is highly toxic, and is also expensive, making it difficult to guarantee safety when manufacturing large power batteries.
2. Lithium iron phosphate battery
Advantages: Lithium iron phosphate contains no harmful elements, is inexpensive, has excellent safety, and a cycle life of up to 10,000 cycles.
Disadvantages: The energy density of lithium iron phosphate batteries is lower than that of lithium cobalt oxide and ternary batteries.
3. Ternary lithium batteries
Advantages: Ternary materials allow for a balance and control over specific energy, cycle life, safety, and cost.
Disadvantages: Ternary materials have poorer thermal stability. For example, NCM11 decomposes at around 300℃, while NCM811 decomposes at around 220℃.
4. Lithium manganese oxide battery
Advantages: Lithium manganese oxide has low cost, good safety and low-temperature performance.
Disadvantages: Lithium manganese oxide is not a very stable material and is prone to decomposition, producing gas.
5. Lithium nickel oxide battery
Advantages: Lithium nickel oxide has advantages such as high specific capacity, low pollution, moderate price, and good compatibility with electrolytes.
Disadvantages: Lithium nickelate is difficult to synthesize and has poor cycle stability.
Lithium-ion batteries weigh half as much as nickel-cadmium or nickel-metal hydride batteries of the same capacity; a single lithium-ion battery cell operates at 3.7V, equivalent to three nickel-cadmium or nickel-metal hydride batteries connected in series; lithium-ion batteries do not contain metallic lithium and are not subject to restrictions on air transport prohibiting the carrying of lithium batteries on passenger aircraft.
