What is an embedded system, and what are its components?

2026-04-06 02:16:44 · · #1

An embedded system is a fully functional system that can operate independently with almost no reliance on other external devices. This system comprises software and hardware, is application-centric, computer-based, and allows for the flexible selection of software and hardware modules according to requirements; it is a specialized computer system.

The software component of an embedded system includes the software runtime environment and operating system, while the hardware component includes signal processors, memory, and communication modules, among other things. Compared to traditional computer systems, embedded systems differ significantly; they cannot achieve large-capacity storage, and their software is based on API interfaces as the core platform.

Compared to traditional computers, embedded systems offer advantages such as high customizability, small size, good real-time performance, good scalability, high reliability, and low power consumption. Because embedded systems are specifically customized for particular users, they typically possess a high degree of specialization. Furthermore, embedded systems have a very high degree of integration, resulting in very low power consumption, small size, and extremely high reliability.

Embedded systems primarily function around a CPU, but the embedding methods and programs differ across systems. Based on the closeness of the connection between the embedded system and the computer, embedding methods are categorized into fully embedded and semi-embedded forms. Fully embedded systems can operate independently without relying on a computer system; devices like mobile phones and music players fall into this category. Semi-embedded systems, on the other hand, must be integrated with a computer to function.

Currently, embedded systems have a wide range of applications, including industrial production, daily life, aerospace and other fields. With the development of computers and manufacturing processes, embedded systems will gradually expand into other fields by maximizing the synergy of hardware and software capabilities and optimizing design schemes.
