What should you pay attention to in order to extend the life of your car battery?

Generally, car batteries have a lifespan of 2 to 3 years. However, many new car owners experience their batteries not reaching their expected lifespan due to improper driving habits.

So, what should we pay attention to during the daily use of storage batteries?

1. If a vehicle battery is not used for a long time, it will slowly discharge itself until it is unusable.

Therefore, for vehicles that have been parked for extended periods, the engine should be started and run for a while periodically (ideally, driven for an extended period) to charge the battery. Additionally, disconnecting the two terminals on the battery can reduce self-discharge. However, it's important to note that when disconnecting the terminals, the negative terminal should be disconnected first, or the negative terminal should be disconnected from the vehicle chassis. Then, disconnect the other terminal marked with the positive (+) sign.

2. When turning off the vehicle, remember to turn off both the interior and exterior lights.

If you forget to turn off your car lights, the battery may run out of power overnight, preventing the vehicle from starting. In this case, you will need to use professional equipment to charge the battery. It's important to note that completely draining the battery will shorten its lifespan, so this should be avoided.

3. Do not listen to high-powered audio equipment after the engine is turned off.

Listening to high-powered audio equipment for extended periods without starting the car can also put a very high load on the battery and may even affect the next time the vehicle is started.

4. Avoid starting the vehicle frequently.

Each time you start the engine, do not exceed 3 seconds. If it fails to start on the first try, do not attempt to start it repeatedly. From the perspective of how a car works, excessively frequent and continuous starting can cause over-discharge and damage to the battery. It is recommended that the interval between consecutive engine starts should exceed 5 seconds, and the number of attempts should not be excessive.

5. Regularly check the battery status.

Batteries nearing the end of their lifespan may show noticeable signs during vehicle use, such as difficulty starting, more pronounced problems after a few days of parking, or even failure to start the car. Therefore, a routine maintenance check of the battery should be performed around two years into its lifespan to help prevent this issue.
