What are the characteristics of hydrogen fuel cells?

A hydrogen fuel cell is a power generation device that directly converts the chemical energy of hydrogen and oxygen into electrical energy. Its basic principle is the reverse reaction of water electrolysis. Hydrogen and oxygen are supplied to the anode and cathode, respectively. After hydrogen diffuses outward through the anode and reacts with the electrolyte, it releases electrons and reaches the cathode through an external load.

Dry cell batteries and storage batteries are energy storage devices that store electrical energy and release it when needed; while hydrogen fuel cells are strictly speaking a power generation device, like a power plant, which is an electrochemical power generation device that directly converts chemical energy into electrical energy.

In addition, the electrodes of hydrogen fuel cells are made of special porous materials, which is a key technology for hydrogen fuel cells. They not only provide a large contact surface for the gas and electrolyte, but also catalyze the chemical reaction of the cell.

Features of hydrogen fuel cells

1. Pollution-free

Fuel cells are environmentally friendly. They operate through an electrochemical reaction, rather than through combustion (gasoline, diesel) or energy storage (batteries)—the most typical traditional backup power solutions. Combustion releases pollutants such as COx, NOx, SOx gases, and particulate matter. As mentioned above, fuel cells only produce water and heat. If hydrogen is generated from renewable energy sources (photovoltaic panels, wind power, etc.), the entire cycle is a completely harmless emission process.

2. No noise

Fuel cells operate quietly, with a noise level of only about 55 dB, equivalent to normal conversation. This makes fuel cells suitable for indoor installation or outdoor locations where noise is a constraint.

3. High efficiency

Fuel cells can achieve a power generation efficiency of over 50%, which is determined by the conversion properties of fuel cells, which directly convert chemical energy into electrical energy without the need for intermediate conversion through thermal energy and mechanical energy (generator).
