What are some common cathode materials for lithium batteries?

2026-04-06 09:41:09 · · #1

With the continuous development of lithium-ion batteries, their application fields are gradually expanding. The use of cathode materials has shifted from a single approach to a diversified one, including olivine-type lithium iron phosphate, layered lithium cobalt oxide, spinel-type lithium manganese oxide, and so on, achieving the coexistence of multiple materials. Among lithium battery cathode materials, the most commonly used materials are lithium cobalt oxide, lithium manganese oxide, lithium iron phosphate, and ternary materials (polymers of nickel, cobalt, and manganese).

1. Lithium cobalt oxide

As a cathode material, lithium cobalt oxide was the earliest to be used and remains a mainstream cathode material in consumer electronics. Compared with other cathode materials, lithium cobalt oxide exhibits higher voltage during operation, more stable voltage operation during charging or discharging, meets the requirements of high current, has strong cycle performance, high conductivity, and its materials and lithium battery processes are relatively stable.

2. Ternary cathode materials

It exhibits a significant ternary synergistic effect, showing a greater advantage in thermal stability compared to lithium cobalt oxide, and its lower production cost makes it the best alternative to lithium cobalt oxide. However, its density is lower and its cycle performance needs improvement. These issues can be addressed by improving the synthesis process and using ion doping.

3. Lithium iron phosphate

It exhibits excellent cycle performance and thermal stability during charging and discharging, provides strong safety assurance during use, and is environmentally friendly, causing no serious damage to the environment. At the same time, it is also relatively inexpensive, making it the best material for the production of large battery modules in my country's battery industry.
