Lithium thionyl chloride (Li/SOCl2) batteries are the highest energy density batteries in practical applications, reaching 590 Wh/kg and 1100 Wh/dm. This highest energy density is achieved by large-capacity, low-discharge-rate, large-size batteries.
The application of lithium thionyl chloride (Li/SOCl2) batteries leverages the advantages of this series, such as high specific energy and long storage life. Low-current discharge cylindrical batteries can serve as power sources for CMOS memory, water and electricity meters, and radio frequency identification (RFID) devices in applications such as highway automatic electronic toll payment systems (ETC systems, although a better solution is to use lithium manganese pouch batteries), programmable logic controllers, and wireless security alarm systems (this solution can be replaced by 3V lithium manganese button and pouch batteries).
Because these lithium batteries are expensive, their safety remains a major concern, and their handling requires special attention, their application in the general consumer market remains limited.
Below are some application areas for lithium thionyl chloride batteries and lithium manganese batteries.
