Lithium-carbon dioxide (Li-CO2) batteries are a new type of rechargeable battery, with lithium carbide (LiC6) as the positive electrode and carbon dioxide (CO2) as the negative electrode. Lithium-carbon dioxide batteries are a novel type of lithium-ion battery and are widely considered an important technology in the field of energy storage.

Working principle of lithium carbon dioxide batteries

The working principle of a lithium-carbon dioxide battery is that when the battery is charged, lithium ions move from the positive electrode through the electrolyte to the negative electrode. The carbon used as the negative electrode has a layered structure with many micropores, and the lithium ions that reach the negative electrode are embedded in these micropores. Therefore, the more lithium ions embedded, the higher the charging capacity.

During discharge, lithium ions move from the LiC6 cathode to the CO2 anode, while CO2 is reduced to form solid carbon. During charging, the process is reversed: the solid carbon is oxidized at the CO2 anode, releasing electrons, and then the lithium ions return to the LiC6 cathode.

Lithium-carbon dioxide batteries have the following characteristics

High energy density: Compared to traditional lithium-ion batteries, lithium carbon dioxide batteries have a higher energy density, enabling longer driving range or standby time.

Environmental protection: CO2 is a widely present natural gas, and compared with other batteries, lithium carbon dioxide batteries have a smaller impact on the environment.

Storage safety: Since CO2 is a stable gas, lithium carbon dioxide batteries have high storage safety.

Short cycle life: Currently, lithium carbon dioxide batteries have a relatively short cycle life, which needs to be further improved.

Low reaction rate: Lithium-carbon dioxide batteries have a slow reaction rate and require higher operating temperatures to improve performance.

Lithium-carbon dioxide batteries still face some technical challenges, such as the selection of electrolytes and the solidification of CO2, but they have broad application prospects in the field of sustainable energy in the future.
