What are the differences between residential solar PV and industrial/commercial solar PV?

Photovoltaic power plants can be divided into centralized power plants and distributed power plants. Centralized power plants are generally built in the Northwest region. Distributed power plants are more dispersed and mainly include residential photovoltaic (PV) systems and industrial/commercial PV systems. So, what are the differences between residential and industrial/commercial PV systems?

1. What is residential solar power?

Household photovoltaic systems refer to photovoltaic systems installed on residential houses. Photovoltaic panels are installed on the roofs of ordinary people (mainly in rural areas). After installation, the power station can be connected to the national grid. A portion of the electricity generated is used by the household first, and any surplus can be sold back to the national grid.

2. What is industrial and commercial photovoltaic power?

Commercial and industrial photovoltaic systems primarily involve placing solar panels on the rooftops of industrial and commercial factories and warehouses. Distributed commercial and industrial photovoltaic systems mainly utilize the rooftops of industrial and commercial enterprises, employing diverse distributed photovoltaic solutions to convert solar energy into electricity, thereby achieving self-consumption of the generated electricity.

3. Differences between residential photovoltaic (PV) and industrial/commercial PV systems

The main differences between residential photovoltaic (PV) systems and industrial/commercial PV systems lie in the scale of the power plant, management methods, application procedures, and policy guidance. Among these, national policy guidance has a significant impact on the entire residential PV power generation industry.

The participants in industrial and commercial distributed photovoltaic power stations are all large enterprises and companies. The scale of the entire power station project is large, and the enterprises themselves have strong risk resistance capabilities. Therefore, they are relatively less affected by the new policy.

Residential photovoltaic power generation targets individual households and small-scale users. The lower entry threshold, smaller power station scale, and lower investment costs, coupled with the booming photovoltaic industry in earlier years, have led many people to join the residential photovoltaic power generation sector.
