Solar power generation is a versatile electrical technology applicable to numerous fields, large and small. It can be used anywhere with sunlight, installed on any surface, or integrated into building structures, easily achieving unmanned and fully automated operation. Due to these characteristics, solar cells are widely used in space technology worldwide. While bioenergy is the primary renewable energy source, with solar energy accounting for a small proportion, by 2050 the proportion of conventional and nuclear energy will decrease to 47%, while renewable energy will rise to 53%. Among renewable energy sources, solar energy (including solar thermal utilization and solar power generation) will be the leading source, accounting for 29% of total energy consumption. Notably, solar power generation alone will account for 25% of total energy consumption.

A solar cell is a device that converts light energy (mainly sunlight) into electrical energy. Based on the photovoltaic effect, the electric field within a PN junction separates photogenerated carriers, causing them to travel to both sides of the junction and generate a photovoltage. This photovoltage is then connected to an external circuit to produce power output. The power of a solar cell is related to the intensity of sunlight; the stronger the sunlight, the stronger the output power. Solar energy systems have advantages such as easy installation, expansion, and dismantling. Using solar energy is also economical, as there is no energy consumption during operation. Furthermore, the system is resistant to mechanical wear; a reliable solar cell is required for the solar energy to be received and stored.

Solar power generation is simple, with no moving mechanical parts, consumes no fuel, emits no substances including greenhouse gases, and is noiseless and pollution-free. Solar energy resources are widely distributed and inexhaustible. Therefore, compared with new power generation technologies such as wind power, biomass power, and nuclear power, solar power is a renewable energy power generation technology with the most ideal characteristics of sustainable development (the richest resources and the cleanest power generation process), possessing the following main advantages.

①Solar energy resources are inexhaustible; the amount of solar energy reaching the Earth is 6,000 times greater than the energy currently consumed by humankind. Moreover, solar energy is widely distributed across the Earth; solar power generation systems can be used wherever there is sunlight, without being limited by factors such as region or altitude.

②Solar energy resources are readily available and can be supplied locally, eliminating the need for long-distance transmission and avoiding energy loss caused by long-distance transmission lines.

③ The energy conversion process of solar power generation is simple, directly converting light energy into electrical energy without intermediate processes (such as the conversion of heat energy into mechanical energy, or mechanical energy into electromagnetic energy) or mechanical movement, and therefore there is no mechanical wear. According to thermodynamic analysis, solar power generation has a very high theoretical power generation efficiency, reaching over 80%, and has enormous potential for technological development.

④ Solar power generation itself does not use fuel, does not emit any substances including greenhouse gases and other waste gases, does not pollute the air, does not generate noise, is environmentally friendly, and will not be affected by energy crises or fuel market instability. It is a truly green and environmentally friendly new type of renewable energy.

⑤ Solar power generation does not require cooling water and can be installed in arid deserts and Gobi areas. Solar power generation can also be easily integrated with buildings to form building-integrated photovoltaic (BIPV) systems, which do not require separate land use and save valuable land resources.

⑥ Solar power generation has no mechanical transmission parts, making it simple to operate and maintain, and ensuring stable and reliable operation. A solar power generation system only needs solar cell modules to generate electricity, and with the widespread adoption of automatic control technology, it can basically achieve unattended operation and low maintenance costs.

⑦ Solar power generation systems offer stable and reliable performance with a long service life (over 30 years). Crystalline silicon solar cells can last 20-35 years. In solar power generation systems, with proper design and selection, the lifespan of batteries can also reach 10-15 years.

⑧ Solar cell modules have a simple structure, small size, and light weight, making them easy to transport and install. Solar power generation systems have a short construction cycle and can be scaled up or down according to the power load capacity, making them convenient, flexible, and easy to combine and expand.

Solar cells are a promising new type of power source, possessing three major advantages: permanence, cleanliness, and flexibility. Compared to thermal power and nuclear power, solar photovoltaic power generation does not cause environmental pollution; solar cells can be used in a wide range of scales, from large-scale medium-sized power plants of millions of kilowatts to small-scale independent solar power systems supplying electricity to a single household—features unmatched by other power sources.
