Technical Insights | Read/Write Communication Between the DEKWEL EX-6321 Communication Module and the EX-1030 Adapter

2026-04-06 03:34:19 · · #1

The main function of the communication module is to communicate and interact with other industrial equipment.

A communication module is a hardware device used to enable communication between a PLC and other control devices. It is commonly used in applications where the PLC exchanges data and performs real-time control with other devices through various communication protocols, thereby achieving data sharing and control.

This article will introduce how to use the DEKWL Modbus RTU Master EX-6321 module and the Modbus RTU Slave EX-1030 adapter for read and write communication.

02. Network Topology Diagram

03. Equipment Configuration

Open Sysmac Studio and create a new project. In the project tree on the left, select "EtherCAT" > right-click "Master Device" > "Show ESI Libraries".

Select "Install (File)" (The XML file for EX-1100 can be downloaded from the Deckerwell website).

04. Scan and add modules

1. Switch the controller to online mode

2. Download the project to the controller.

3. Right-click "Master device" to open the menu > "Compare and merge with physical network devices".

4. Apply physical network configuration and confirm.

05. Communication Module Parameters

1. Select “Node” > Select “EX-6321” > “Edit Initialization Parameter Settings” to open the configuration menu.

2. The pop-up menu allows you to modify the EX-6321's baud rate, data bits, parity, stop bits, communication timeout, and message frame character interval. After making modifications, click Apply and Confirm.

3. After modifying the parameters, select "Node 1" and change the module configuration sending method to "Send".

06. I/O mapping

The I/O mapping and input/output process data of the EX-6321 module are shown in the figure below.

Detailed input/output specifications can be found in the EX-6321 user manual downloaded from the Deckerwell website.

07. Communication Read/Write Demonstration

Switch the controller to online mode and download the project to the controller.

1. Use function code 16 to write 65535 into the output register of EX-1030, and turn on the output of EX-310H.

1) First, write the Modbus RTU slave station number (1), Modbus function code (16), Modbus RTU slave output register address (0), data length (1), and transmitted data (65535) into the output variable;

2) Then send the Modbus RTU message to position 1;

3) After successful communication, the "Communication Status" will change to 3, indicating that the master station has completed sending and the slave station has completed receiving.

2. Use function code 04 to read the input register of EX-1030 and read the input of EX-210H.

1) First, write the Modbus RTU slave station number (1), Modbus function code (04), Modbus RTU slave output register address (0), and data length (1) into the output variable;

2) Then send the Modbus RTU message to position 1;

3) After successful communication, the "Communication Status" will change to 3, indicating that the master station has completed sending and the slave station has completed receiving.

The EX-6321 and EX-1030 used in this demonstration are the Modbus RTU Master communication module and the Modbus RTU Slave adapter, respectively.

The EX-6321 communication module can also transmit and communicate with other devices to achieve data sharing and control, such as frequency converters and industrial instruments.
