Recently, news about Apple launching a new power battery has not only dominated social media but also frequently made headlines.
It is understood that Apple plans to use a unique "Monocell" design, eliminating the need for pouches or modularity, allowing for larger individual cells within the battery pack and freeing up internal space. This design means the battery can hold more active materials, thereby increasing the car's driving range.
In biology, "Monocell" means "single cell," while in the battery industry, "cell" generally refers to "battery cell." Therefore, "Monocell" can be understood to some extent as "single cell," which may mean that Apple's power batteries will adopt a "single cell" configuration.
Of course, whether Apple will adopt the revolutionary "monocell" design remains a matter of speculation. However, the report suggests that the essence of "monocell" is still modularization, which is very similar to the LFP batteries that CATL currently supplies to Tesla and the CTP technology used in BYD's popular blade battery.
CTP (Cell to Pack) technology simplifies the manufacturing process from cell to module to package to cell to package. Essentially, it maximizes the performance of individual cells by eliminating or simplifying the module process and through structural design and optimization, thereby achieving a breakthrough in the group performance indicators without changing the electrochemical system.
Regarding battery materials, Apple is considering using lithium iron phosphate (LFP). This is also the material currently used in the entry-level battery of the domestically produced Tesla Model 3. It naturally possesses better safety and is less prone to thermal runaway than other lithium-ion batteries such as ternary lithium batteries.
Market commentary on Apple's battery is: "It's at a completely new level, like the first time you've ever seen an iPhone!"
