Why use a direct drive motor?

What is a direct drive motor? As the name suggests, it is a motor that can be directly connected to the machine load to directly drive the load.

Why use a direct-drive motor? This requires discussing traditional motor drive methods. Traditional motor drives consist of a motor and a reduction gear, which is then connected to the mechanical load. Because the motor torque is insufficient to drive the load, a reduction gear is usually needed to increase the torque. Reduction gears include lead screws, gearboxes, worm gears, pulleys, timing belts, etc. The application of these reduction gears presents a series of challenges.

First, the presence of mechanical backlash leads to wear issues, increasing both energy consumption and maintenance requirements. Second, mechanical backlash also results in reduced precision and slower system response. Furthermore, the reduction gear mechanism increases the overall weight and size of the equipment, and causes numerous inconveniences in installation and maintenance.

Faced with these challenges, one can't help but ask: can we increase the motor torque and eliminate the reduction gear, thereby simplifying the mechanical design?

Thus, the direct drive solution was developed. Through clever design, such as increasing the number of pole pairs and coil turns, the torque of the motor can be effectively increased, allowing the motor to be directly connected to the load for driving without the need for a reduction gear.

Based on their motion patterns, direct drive motors can generally be divided into two main categories: rotary direct drive motors and linear direct drive motors. Based on their packaging, rotary direct drive motors are further divided into framed and frameless types; linear motors are divided into those with an iron core and those without.

Because it eliminates the reduction gear mechanism, the direct drive motor has a simple and compact structure. It is not only highly accurate and rigid, but also requires no maintenance and can effectively reduce energy consumption, thereby helping to reduce the overall cost of ownership of the equipment.

Because of the superior customer value brought by direct drive motors, they have broad application potential in many fields. For example, in aerospace, electronic turntables, collaborative robot arms, silicon battery manufacturing equipment, laser cutting equipment, plastic extrusion equipment, etc., where high driving torque density and high precision are required, direct drive motors have an unparalleled competitive advantage due to their outstanding performance and compact installation dimensions.

With its numerous advantages, including simple structure, high dynamics, high precision, and cost-effectiveness, direct drive motors will become increasingly common in replacing traditional drives, and we expect even more diverse application scenarios to emerge in the future.
