On January 27, Xiang Yanhuo, President of CATL China Passenger Vehicle Solutions Department, officially announced the company's medium- and long-term strategic plan, highlighting the launch of highly integrated CTC battery technology around 2025.
Xiang Yanhuo pointed out that CTC battery technology is expected to be upgraded to the fifth-generation intelligent CTC electric chassis system around 2028. At the same time, efforts are being made to solve the technical bottleneck of lithium metal batteries. By using lithium metal as the negative electrode, the energy density of the power battery can be increased to over 350Wh/kg.
In terms of range, by eliminating the need for a cast battery pack, CTC technology can minimize the weight and space of the battery pack, thereby enabling electric vehicles to achieve a range of at least 800km.
It is understood that CTC is short for Cell to Chassis, which can be understood as a further extension of CTP (Cell to Pack). Its core lies in eliminating the module and packaging process and directly integrating the battery cells into the car chassis to achieve a higher degree of integration.
Regarding CTP (Cell-to-Pack), according to CATL's official introduction, CTP batteries eliminate the need for battery modules, which can increase volume utilization by 15%-20%, reduce the number of parts by 40%, increase production efficiency by 50%, and reduce the manufacturing cost of power batteries compared to traditional battery packs.
Xiang Yanhuo stated that CATL is currently planning its second-generation platform-based CTP battery system, which is scheduled to be put into market application in 2022-2023. CATL will also launch its third-generation series of CTP battery systems for all vehicle types from A00 to D class.
“CTC technology is a further expansion, essentially CATL’s fourth-generation battery system. Based on CTC technology, CATL plans to upgrade to the fifth-generation intelligent CTC electric chassis system around 2028,” Xiang Yanhuo pointed out.
