Why use environmentally friendly batteries? What are the benefits of environmentally friendly batteries?

The seemingly insignificant issue of discarded batteries has caused headaches for all parties involved. The long-standing problems of difficult recycling and disposal have persisted. Yesterday, several officials from the provincial and Fuzhou municipal environmental protection departments, in interviews with reporters, agreed that the main reason for the environmental pollution caused by traditional batteries is their mercury content. Therefore, the current shortcut is to promote the use of mercury-free, environmentally friendly batteries.

So what exactly is an "eco-friendly battery"? How does its cost-effectiveness compare to traditional batteries? Why haven't eco-friendly batteries, despite their numerous advantages, been widely adopted?

1. The development of environmentally friendly batteries, specifically mercury-free batteries, is a major headache.

What exactly are environmentally friendly batteries? During a recent investigation, reporters found that many citizens are unaware of this. In fact, environmentally friendly batteries are simply mercury-free batteries. The national definition of a mercury-free battery is one with a mercury content of less than 0.0001% of its weight, while low-mercury means less than 0.025% of its weight. As early as two years ago, nine ministries, including the China National Light Industry Council, jointly issued a document stipulating that from January 1, 2001, all domestic and foreign battery products (including batteries for electrical appliances) sold in the domestic market must label their mercury content on individual cells. (Currently, there is no national standard for labeling mercury content in batteries, and domestic environmentally friendly battery manufacturers use various methods such as "low-mercury," "mercury-free," "mercury content of 0," or "zero mercury.") Batteries without labeled mercury content are not allowed to be sold in the market. Therefore, when purchasing batteries, we only need to check the mercury content to determine whether they are environmentally friendly.

2. Environmentally friendly batteries can reduce environmental impact.

So why use environmentally friendly batteries? Secretary-General Wang of the China Battery Industry Association explained in a telephone interview that in traditional battery production, mercury is used as a corrosion inhibitor (batteries generate electricity through chemical reactions, or more simply, corrosion). The use of mercury can improve the battery's discharge and storage performance. However, if discarded batteries are not properly disposed of, the mercury can seep into the soil and water, entering the natural cycle and polluting the environment. my country is a major consumer of batteries, accounting for about one-third of the world's total. Imagine the threat to our living space if everyone used mercury-containing batteries. Environmentally friendly batteries are those that contain no mercury or have extremely low mercury content. Given the current limitations of domestic battery disposal methods, using such batteries can significantly reduce the pollution of water and soil by discarded batteries, thus minimizing their harm to human health.

3. Environmentally friendly batteries offer high cost-effectiveness.

In fact, most consumers, while paying attention to environmental protection, are even more concerned about affordability.

Secretary-General Wang of the China Battery Industry Association told reporters that environmentally friendly batteries offer significantly better value for money than ordinary batteries. Firstly, domestically produced environmentally friendly batteries are currently alkaline, containing 2-4 times the capacity of ordinary batteries. Although they are more expensive, buying environmentally friendly batteries is still cost-effective. More importantly, they are environmentally friendly; even if accidentally abandoned in the wild, they will not pollute water sources and soil due to mercury leakage.

In random interviews conducted at the Provincial Second Light Industry School and the Normal University, many students said they had vaguely heard of the concept of environmentally friendly batteries, but weren't very clear about it. Their main deciding factor when purchasing batteries was price. After the reporter explained the concept of environmentally friendly batteries, the vast majority of respondents indicated they would choose them more often in the future.

4. Three reasons hindering the promotion of environmentally friendly batteries

Given the numerous benefits of environmentally friendly batteries, why aren't they being widely adopted? Secretary-General Wang told reporters that this promotion effort has actually been ongoing. Currently, there are three main reasons why batteries haven't yet achieved low-mercury production: First, price factors. Producing mercury-free alkaline zinc-manganese batteries requires the use of mercury-free zinc powder, specialized electrolytic manganese dioxide, and specially treated negative electrode fluid, etc. The use of new equipment will increase production costs by more than 10%. Second, technological factors. Due to equipment and process limitations, some companies' mercury-free batteries cannot achieve the same electrical and storage performance as high-mercury batteries, forcing them to settle for low-mercury batteries. Third, the upgrading of old equipment and production lines requires a process and cannot be completed all at once.
