Wind speed and direction sensors are a type of sensor that measures wind speed and direction. To enhance understanding of wind speed and direction sensors, this article will introduce them and their technical parameters. If you are interested in wind speed and direction sensors, please continue reading.

I. Wind speed and direction sensor

Although wind direction and wind speed sensors are two completely independent sensors, in most cases they are integrated into the same measuring device and work together by comprehensively processing the data.

A wind direction sensor is a physical device that detects and senses external wind direction information by rotating a wind direction arrow, transmits this information to a coaxial encoder, and outputs corresponding wind direction values. Its main body adopts the mechanical structure of a wind vane; when wind blows towards the tail fin of the wind vane, the arrow of the wind vane will point in the direction the wind is blowing. To maintain sensitivity to direction, different internal mechanisms are also used to help the wind speed sensor determine direction.

A wind speed sensor is a sensor that can continuously measure wind speed and air volume (air volume = wind speed x cross-sectional area). A common type of wind speed sensor is the cup anemometer, first invented by Robert Robinson in England. The sensing element consists of three or four conical or hemispherical hollow cups. The hollow cup shells are fixed to a triangular star-shaped support at 120° intervals or a cross-shaped support at 90° intervals. The concave surfaces of the cups are aligned in one direction, and the entire horizontal arm is fixed to a vertical rotating shaft.

In the field of meteorology, observations of various natural phenomena are accomplished through weather stations, which are mainly used to measure meteorological elements such as temperature, relative humidity, illuminance, rainfall, wind speed, wind direction, and air pressure. The monitoring of wind speed and direction relies on wind speed and direction sensors.

The polycarbonate wind direction sensor and polycarbonate wind speed sensor are manufactured by Shandong Renke Measurement and Control using polycarbonate composite materials, which have good anti-corrosion and anti-erosion characteristics; they can ensure that the wind speed transmitter will not rust after long-term use and the wind direction transmitter will not deform after long-term use.

The polycarbonate wind vane sensor boasts high mechanical strength and rigidity. Its structure and weight are meticulously designed and distributed, resulting in low rotational inertia and sensitive response. Utilizing high-performance imported bearings, it exhibits low rotational resistance and accurate measurements. It also features electromagnetic interference protection. Employing a structure similar to a sliding rheostat, it marks the maximum and minimum resistance values at 360° and 0° respectively. When the wind vane rotates, the slider of the rheostat rotates along with the top of the vane, and the resulting voltage changes allow for the calculation of the wind angle or direction.

The polycarbonate anemometer is compact and lightweight, with excellent electromagnetic interference protection. Its bottom-out wiring design completely eliminates the aging issues associated with aviation connector rubber pads. The device's structure and weight are carefully designed and distributed, resulting in low rotational inertia and sensitive response. It employs a three-cup design concept and uses high-performance imported bearings, minimizing rotational resistance and ensuring accurate measurement. When the anemometer cups rotate, they drive a coaxial multi-toothed disc or magnetic rod to rotate. A signal proportional to the anemometer cup rotation speed is obtained through the circuit. This signal is counted by a counter, and the actual wind speed value is calculated.

In the work of controlling wind and sand in desert and plateau areas, people need to pay attention to the speed and direction of airflow. We install wind speed and direction sensors in solar-powered weather stations to monitor wind speed and direction and transmit the data to the weather station. After integrating all the meteorological information, the weather station uploads the data to the wind and sand control monitoring backend via GPRS/4G.

With the development of modern science and technology, new types of wind speed sensors, such as lasers, have begun to be used in wind speed detection. It is believed that in the near future, various new wind direction and speed sensors will be increasingly used in various fields such as construction machinery, railways, ports, docks, power plants, meteorology, cableways, environment, greenhouses, and aquaculture.
