Polycrystalline silicon and monocrystalline silicon are two different substances. Polycrystalline silicon is a chemical term commonly known as glass. High-purity polycrystalline silicon material is high-purity glass. Monocrystalline silicon is the raw material for making solar photovoltaic cells and also the material for making semiconductor chips. Due to the scarcity of silicon ore raw materials for producing monocrystalline silicon and the complexity of the production process, the output is low and the price is high.

I. Distinguishing between monocrystalline and polycrystalline plate materials

Simply put, the difference between monocrystalline and polycrystalline silicon lies in their atomic structure arrangement. Monocrystalline silicon has an ordered arrangement, while polycrystalline silicon has a disordered arrangement. This is mainly determined by their processing techniques. Polycrystalline silicon is mostly produced using the casting method, which involves directly pouring silicon material into a crucible to melt and shape it. Monocrystalline silicon, on the other hand, is produced using a modified Siemens process called Czochralski, a process that involves the rearrangement of atomic structures. To the naked eye, monocrystalline silicon appears to have a uniform surface, while polycrystalline silicon appears to have many shards of glass inside, giving it a shimmering appearance.

These solar cells use high-purity monocrystalline silicon rods as raw materials, requiring a purity of 99.999%. The photoelectric conversion efficiency of monocrystalline silicon solar cells is around 15%, with some reaching as high as 24%, which is the highest among current types of solar cells. However, their high manufacturing cost prevents their widespread and common use. Because monocrystalline silicon is typically encapsulated with tempered glass and waterproof resin, it is robust and durable, with a lifespan generally reaching 15 years, and sometimes as long as 25 years.

2. Characteristics of Polycrystalline Silicon Solar Cells

The manufacturing process of polycrystalline silicon solar cells is similar to that of monocrystalline silicon solar cells, but the photoelectric conversion efficiency of polycrystalline silicon solar cells is significantly lower, around 12%. In terms of manufacturing cost, it is somewhat cheaper than monocrystalline silicon solar cells; the materials are simpler to manufacture, energy consumption is lower, and the overall production cost is lower, thus leading to its widespread adoption. Furthermore, the lifespan of polycrystalline silicon solar cells is also shorter than that of monocrystalline silicon solar cells. In terms of performance-price ratio, monocrystalline silicon solar cells are slightly better.
