What is a voice coil motor?

The term "voice coil" comes from loudspeakers. A loudspeaker contains a coil that, when energized, experiences a Lorentz force in a magnetic field, causing it to vibrate and produce sound. Voice coil motors operate on a similar principle.

A simple voice coil motor consists of a permanent magnet, a magnetic material, and a coil. The permanent magnet generates a constant magnetic field, and when current flows through the coil, the direction of the force on the coil can be determined according to the left-hand rule. For example, the direction of the current shown in the diagram below will cause the coil to experience a downward force.

According to F=B×I, the magnitude and direction of force can be adjusted and reversed by changing the magnitude and direction of the current. Voice coil motors do not drive the horn of a loudspeaker, but rather the loads in different applications. Based on the above principles, the moving parts can be either coils or magnetic tracks, and dozens of structures can be derived from the simplest structure, such as flat plate, multi-coil, and double-sided magnet types.
