What is an AI factory? How does it work?

As generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) becomes increasingly prevalent, CIOs in many organizations are optimizing their IT systems to fully leverage the potential of AI technology. For example, US telecom giant AT&T has deployed more than 3,000 AI bots to perform repetitive tasks, and Delta Airlines uses an AI-powered IT operations management platform to reduce the impact of service disruptions on customers.

However, as IT environments evolve, IT infrastructure also needs to be updated and transformed. The pace of data center development is struggling to keep up with the benefits AI brings to organizations. Many organizations are optimizing for AI to automate operations, improve resource management, enhance cybersecurity, and deliver better services.

Nevertheless, data centers still cannot provide the resources needed for the large-scale development and implementation of AI applications, and a new ecosystem has emerged: the AI ​​factory.

What does an AI factory do?

AI factories or AI data centers are facilities designed to meet the specific needs of AI, providing the infrastructure and resources for deploying complex AI applications and models.

The purpose of an AI factory is similar to that of a data center and a manufacturing plant. Just as a factory produces products, an AI factory produces "intelligence," which is then used to run AI models and other assets, as well as IT systems.

Nina Abide, Consulting Director at Artefact, stated, "AI factories streamline the production of AI models through standardized processes, enabling efficient scaling across industries. They cover all stages from data preparation to model deployment and leverage automation to improve speed and efficiency."

An inherent characteristic of AI factories is the generation of intelligence. AI factories process vast amounts of data to generate intelligence and update the systems they operate, or to create outputs including text, images, video, or audio content. The intelligence generated by AI factories can also serve as commands to control systems such as robots or supercomputers.

In March 2024, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang introduced his vision for the AI ​​factory at the GTC conference, defining it as "a place where raw materials are transformed into valuable new products." He called the AI ​​factory "the home of a new industrial revolution."

He said, "The raw materials input to the AI ​​factory are data and electricity, and the products it produces are data tokens. These tokens are invisible, can be sent all over the world, and are very valuable."

Methods for Enterprises to Build AI Factories

As specially constructed facilities, AI factories enable the full implementation of AI within IT environments. These tailored data centers possess the hardware and software necessary to deploy GenAI into IT operations, thereby improving efficiency, scalability, and innovation.

“AI factories can improve efficiency through process automation and workflow optimization,” said Martijn Karrenbeld, Global Manufacturing Director at Arcadis. “One real benefit is the ability to reduce operating costs by streamlining the manufacturing process. This provides greater organizational flexibility and scalability for future business expansion, thereby accelerating time to market.”

How do AI factories work?

The idea behind AI factories is to train AI models to generate intelligence. To do this, relevant data is fed into the model of the computing system so that it can analyze the data and make predictions.

If these predictions are accurate, the AI ​​model will be trained and can begin to perform the required tasks through the AI ​​inference process.

Compared to traditional data centers, AI factories require significantly more power, energy, and cooling solutions. In fact, because these facilities are typically designed to handle massive amounts of data and develop or train new systems, they necessitate high-performance server racks, dedicated hardware accelerators, large storage systems, and network infrastructure.

To handle the relevant workloads, the AI ​​factory is built with specialized IT hardware, including custom-designed AI chips and graphics processing units (GPUs).
