Many electric vehicle manufacturers have noticed a significant increase in battery bulging during hotter weather compared to other seasons. Currently, many battery manufacturers are strengthening their after-sales service standards, and batteries bulging may face downgrading or even being excluded from after-sales service. So, what are the causes of battery bulging in hot weather, and how can it be prevented?
Through consultation with battery technicians, it was learned that there are multiple reasons why batteries bulge due to hot weather, with 60% of the reasons mainly caused by the following three points:
1. Electric vehicle chargers are exposed to high temperatures when charging batteries, causing charger parameters to drift.
As the weather gets warmer, many electric vehicle users don't pay attention to cooling their chargers while charging their batteries. When a charger itself generates heat while charging the battery, exposure to high temperatures can easily cause charger parameters to drift. This drift is particularly common with lower-quality chargers. When the battery is fully charged, a charger with drifting parameters may not immediately switch off its indicator light and continue charging. After repeated occurrences, the battery is prone to swelling.
2. The electric vehicle stops and the battery is charged immediately, before the battery has had a chance to cool down.
When an electric vehicle is being ridden, the battery itself generates heat. In hot weather, the battery temperature can even reach over 70°C. Charging the battery under these conditions will exacerbate water loss, reduce battery life, and increase the risk of battery bulging.
3. Charging the battery under direct sunlight will accelerate water loss in the battery.
Batteries also generate heat during charging. Charging in direct sunlight can cause water loss, damaging the battery and leading to bulging.
As the weather gets warmer, try to charge your electric vehicle in a shady spot or in the evening. Battery manufacturers currently impose severe penalties for bulging batteries; a bulging battery can lead to a price reduction. When selling electric vehicles and replacing batteries, remind customers of this to avoid future inconvenience.
