What are the differences between industrial PCs and regular computers?

Industrial control computers (ICCs) are a type of computer system that runs specific industrial applications and differs significantly from ordinary computers. This article will introduce the differences between them.

The difference between industrial PCs and ordinary computers in terms of usage environment is very significant. Ordinary computers are usually used in indoor environments such as homes and offices, while industrial PCs are often used in harsh environments such as factories, mines, and ships. Therefore, industrial PCs have higher anti-interference capabilities and shock resistance.

Industrial control computers (ICCs) need to meet higher requirements for stability and reliability. This is partly because their applications in manufacturing and other industries require continuous 24/7 operation; and partly because their environments are harsh, increasing the probability of unexpected hardware failures. Therefore, ICCs must possess higher reliability and fault tolerance. Professional industrial computers must support long-term stable operation and provide rapid replacement and reliable data recovery capabilities in the event of hardware failure.

Industrial PCs differ significantly from ordinary computers in their interfaces. While ordinary computers typically have standard video and audio output interfaces, industrial PCs require various data input/output interfaces tailored to specific application scenarios and protocols, including standard and non-standard interfaces such as RS232, RS488, CAN, and Ethernet. Industrial PCs also need to support various industrial bus protocols, such as PROFIBUS, Modbus, and DeviceNet, to ensure seamless connectivity with factory equipment.

The operating systems of industrial PCs also differ from those of ordinary computers. While Windows has a very high market share in the ordinary computer market, there are numerous models available in the industrial PC market. Because industrial PCs need to meet requirements such as reliability, stability, and real-time performance, they typically use embedded systems, such as Windows Embedded, Linux, and real-time operating systems (RTOS). These operating systems are also optimized for real-time performance and customizability.

Compared to ordinary computers, industrial control computers possess stronger shock resistance, higher stability and reliability, richer interfaces, and more specialized operating systems. The widespread application of industrial control computers has driven development in relevant fields, including industrial automation, smart cities, and the Internet of Vehicles. In the future, the market demand for industrial control computers will become more diversified and personalized.
