Many people believe that unused lithium battery packs can still be used normally later if stored properly. This is not the case. Even when not in use, lithium batteries will discharge at a rate of 0.2% to 0.3% per day. Furthermore, after a period of storage, even without cycling, a small portion of the capacity will be permanently lost, and the battery's lifespan will also decrease. Below, we will introduce how to properly store lithium battery packs.
Both lithium-ion and nickel-cadmium battery packs have strict requirements for the temperature and humidity of the storage environment. Among all environmental factors, temperature has the greatest impact on battery charging and discharging. The electrochemical reactions inside a lithium-ion battery pack are related to the ambient temperature. Too low a temperature will cause the battery to have no voltage output, while too high a temperature will cause the battery to self-discharge faster.
Short-term storage: Store lithium battery packs in a dry place free from corrosive gases, with a temperature and humidity between -20℃ and 35℃. High temperatures may cause the battery's metal parts to rust or the battery to leak.
Long-term storage:
1. When lithium batteries are not used for a long time, they should be charged to 50%~80% and stored in a dry and cool environment. Charge them once every 3 months to prevent irreversible capacity loss due to self-discharge caused by prolonged storage.
2. The self-discharge of lithium batteries is affected by ambient temperature and humidity. High temperature and high humidity will accelerate the self-discharge of the battery. It is recommended to store the battery in a dry environment of 0℃~20℃.
