Analysis of the Lithium-ion Battery Bubbling Issue

2026-04-06 04:34:11 · · #1

What are the causes of lithium-ion battery swelling?

1. Issues with the manufacturing quality of lithium-ion battery packs, including uneven electrode coating and relatively rough production processes;

2. The violent reaction of a short circuit generates a lot of heat, which causes the electrolyte to decompose and vaporize, causing the lithium-ion battery to swell.

3. Other lithium iron phosphate battery packs may also bulge after being left unused for a long time. This is because air is conductive to a certain extent. Therefore, leaving the battery unused for too long is equivalent to the positive and negative terminals of the battery coming into direct contact, resulting in a slow short circuit.

4. Reasons for low-quality lithium-ion battery chargers. Chargers using inferior boards, innovative or low-quality components, overheat, and have inaccurate parameters can cause uncontrolled charging voltage limits, leading to the compression of internal gases in the lithium-ion battery, resulting in battery casing deformation, bulging, cracking, or even explosion.

5. Overcharging. Overcharging can cause gases to erode the plates, leading to the shedding of active materials from the lithium-ion battery pack, shortening battery life, accelerating water loss, affecting electrolyte decomposition, increasing battery temperature, and causing the battery to swell!

How to modify a lithium-ion battery pack if it's bulging?

1. If the phone battery is already bulging from charging, there is a way to fix it. Simply use your finger to find an empty spot on the battery, and then use a needle to poke a small hole to let the air out.

2. Alternatively, purchase a new lithium-ion battery pack and replace the batteries from scratch.

Can a bulging lithium-ion battery in a mobile phone still be used?

It is not recommended to use a bulging lithium-ion battery. During the bulging process, the capacity of the lithium-ion battery pack has decreased, and the standby time is significantly shortened. In severe cases, the standby time may be extremely short, or even unable to make phone calls, with calls restarting immediately upon dialing. In this situation, the battery usually needs to be replaced; for safety, it is best to buy a new battery.

When a lithium-ion battery pack develops a bulging problem, it's best not to continue using it. Because the cells have expanded, and when they reach a certain limit, they may explode, which is extremely dangerous. For your own safety, it's best to replace the lithium-ion battery pack as soon as you notice bulging. This bulging is often caused by poor lithium-ion battery quality or excessive charging time. A bulging battery should not be used; replace it with a new one immediately.
