How to charge a water battery to extend its lifespan?

1. Batteries must never be operated or stored in a discharged state. A discharged state (battery voltage drops by 20%) refers to a battery that has not been charged promptly after use. In a discharged state, the battery is prone to sulfation, where lead sulfate crystals adhere to the plates, blocking ion channels, increasing internal resistance, causing insufficient charging, slow charging, and ultimately reducing battery capacity. The longer the battery is left idle in a discharged state, the more severe the damage, until it is completely unusable.

2. When the battery is not in use, it should be charged once or twice a month to keep it in good condition.

3. When the battery is not in use for an extended period of time, the battery grounding wire should be disconnected.

4. The battery charging current should not be too high, and the charging voltage should not exceed 20% of the battery voltage. It should be charged at one-twentieth of the battery capacity for 24 hours continuously.

Avoid rapid, high-current charging (such as charging for ten hours), as this can easily cause the battery to overheat, even to the point where the electrolyte boils, thus affecting its lifespan.

A water-filled battery is a type of lead-acid battery. Because it contains a relatively high amount of liquid, it is commonly referred to as a "water-filled battery." The liquid in a water-filled battery is prone to leakage and needs to be replenished frequently, hence it is also called a maintainable battery.

These batteries are mostly used in cars and motorcycles.

I. Maintenance Points

Regularly checking the electrolyte level in the battery and adding electrolyte as needed is the most important routine maintenance step. During charging and discharging, the water in the electrolyte gradually decreases due to electrolysis and evaporation, causing the electrolyte level to drop. If not replenished in time, this may shorten the battery's lifespan. Distilled water should be added promptly; never use purified drinking water, as it contains various trace elements that can adversely affect the battery.

There are usually instructions on the battery cover showing how to check the liquid level through the viewing window.

When adding electrolyte, first unscrew the filler screw on the battery cover, then shake the electrolyte well before adding it to the battery. Note that the electrolyte is acidic and may damage clothing and skin.

During use, care should be taken not to overuse the battery. When the power indicator shows that the power is less than 1/3, please charge it in time.

Regularly check the battery cover or the vent hole on the filler screw to ensure it is clear. If it is blocked, the gas produced when the battery is working cannot escape, and the electrolyte will expand and break the battery casing.

Batteries will self-discharge, and if they are not used for a long time, the battery power will be easily depleted. Therefore, the battery should be charged once a month.

II. Water replenishment methods

1. First, remove the battery, disconnect the connecting wires, and wipe it clean with a cloth. Then, unscrew the battery vent cap.

2. Use a syringe to add water to the battery. After adding water, the liquid level must not exceed the upper mark or be lower than the lower mark.

3. After adding water, screw the battery vent cap back on.

4. Install the battery and put it in the car for use. If you need to use the car urgently the next day, you can charge it immediately; otherwise, you can charge it.

If you're using the car, wait overnight before charging to ensure the electrolyte concentration is consistent throughout the battery.
