Why is LiDAR irreplaceable in autonomous driving?

Environmental perception, as the "meta-sensory" of autonomous driving, plays a crucial role in ensuring vehicle safety and improving decision-making efficiency. Among various perception methods, LiDAR, with its precise distance measurement and 3D point cloud construction capabilities, has become an indispensable core sensor in autonomous driving systems. In the perception module of an autonomous driving system, LiDAR takes on the primary responsibility of environmental modeling and obstacle recognition. Unlike cameras, which can only capture two-dimensional image information, LiDAR can emit tens of thousands to hundreds of thousands of laser pulses and obtain precise distances by measuring the round-trip time of the laser, thereby constructing high-density 3D point clouds. These point clouds not only accurately reconstruct the 3D shapes of roads, pedestrians, vehicles, and various facilities, but also possess millimeter-level ranging accuracy and a wide detection range, enabling autonomous driving systems to intuitively and meticulously "see" the surrounding environment and providing a solid foundation for subsequent path planning and obstacle avoidance.

In highway scenarios, the long-range detection advantage of LiDAR is particularly evident. When vehicles are traveling at high speeds, the need for early warning of obstacles ahead is extremely urgent. LiDAR can detect oncoming vehicles, obstacles, and road imperfections from hundreds of meters away and feed this information back to the decision-making module in real time, thus allowing sufficient time for braking or lane changes. Furthermore, in nighttime or low-light environments, because laser pulses do not rely on natural light, LiDAR can still maintain stable ranging performance, compensating for the shortcomings of cameras in low-light conditions, thereby further improving the overall vehicle safety in complex scenarios.

Urban road scenarios are even more complex and varied, with intersections, pedestrians, bicycles, and dynamic obstacles intertwined, making environmental perception tasks more challenging. The dense point cloud acquired by LiDAR helps algorithms accurately segment ground and non-ground points, removing road surface reflection noise while also identifying pedestrian and vehicle outlines, enabling target detection and tracking when combined with deep learning models. When combined with high-precision maps, LiDAR point clouds can also assist in precise positioning—as a vehicle travels along a road, LiDAR matches the real-time point cloud with a pre-stored 3D environmental model, correcting the vehicle's pose with centimeter-level accuracy, providing a reliable basis for stable driving and path planning.

In contrast, while millimeter-wave radar possesses some penetration capability in adverse weather conditions, its resolution and ranging accuracy are far inferior to LiDAR, making it difficult to distinguish small targets with similar shapes. While cameras excel in color and texture recognition, they cannot directly acquire depth information and are susceptible to changes in lighting and strong backlighting. Therefore, LiDAR, with its high resolution, high precision, and strong robustness, not only compensates for the shortcomings of cameras and millimeter-wave radar but also complements them, providing autonomous driving systems with a more comprehensive and accurate environmental awareness.

LiDAR itself is undergoing a rapid transformation from mechanical rotation to solid-state technology. Early mechanical LiDAR achieved omnidirectional scanning by rotating lenses or heads. While offering high detection range and vantage point coverage, it suffered from high cost, large size, and decreased reliability due to wear and inertia limitations of mechanical components. In recent years, solid-state LiDAR technology has gradually emerged, employing MEMS micromirrors and optical phased arrays (OPA) to abandon traditional rotating structures. This has significantly reduced size and cost, improved vibration resistance, and laid the foundation for large-scale mass production and commercial deployment.

A thorough analysis of the core components of a lidar system reveals that it can be divided into a laser emitter, an optical scanning system, a receiver detector, and a data processing unit. The laser emitter typically operates in the 905 nm or 1550 nm wavelength band. The former is less expensive and has higher conversion efficiency, but its safety level is relatively lower; the latter offers higher safety and stronger resistance to environmental interference, but is more expensive. Common receiver detectors include avalanche photodiodes (APDs) and single-photon avalanche diodes (SPADs), which determine the system's sensitivity and signal-to-noise ratio in low-light or long-distance detection. The choice of optical scanning system relates to the field of view and scanning speed, while the final data processing unit needs powerful point cloud processing and real-time transmission capabilities to meet the stringent time-sensitive requirements of autonomous driving.

Specifically, in terms of point cloud data processing and algorithm support, autonomous driving systems typically involve multiple stages, including denoising, ground segmentation, object detection, semantic segmentation, multi-frame fusion, and localization matching. The denoising module utilizes statistical analysis and environmental models to filter out false points caused by rain, snow, dust, and laser scattering. Ground segmentation separates roads from obstacles using model fitting or deep learning methods. Object detection and semantic segmentation rely on neural network structures such as PointNet and VoxelNet to transform point cloud data into semantic labels and 3D bounding boxes for various objects. Multi-frame fusion technology combines inertial measurement unit (IMU) and odometry information to align point clouds from different times, improving the completeness and continuity of environmental perception. Finally, based on SLAM algorithms such as LOAM and FAST-LIO, the system can dynamically construct maps and achieve real-time localization during driving.

In the actual operation of autonomous driving perception systems, LiDAR often forms a multi-layered perception system with cameras, millimeter-wave radar, IMU, and high-precision maps. Cameras acquire rich color and texture information, which is then projected and fused with LiDAR point clouds to further improve semantic understanding of the scene and obstacle classification accuracy. Millimeter-wave radar is more reliable in detecting metallic targets under adverse weather conditions such as rain, snow, and fog, effectively complementing LiDAR. IMU provides the system with high-frequency attitude change information, filling short-term positioning gaps when the LiDAR frame rate is low. High-precision maps provide prior environmental information for LiDAR positioning and decision-making, enabling a higher level of vehicle-road cooperation.

At the system integration and calibration level, the external parameter calibration of LiDAR and other sensors, time synchronization, and thermal runaway and vibration compensation are crucial. Calibration accuracy directly affects the accuracy of multi-sensor fusion. Typically, calibration boards, calibration targets, and automatic calibration algorithms are used to solve the spatial transformation matrix between the LiDAR, camera, and IMU. Time synchronization requires hardware triggering or the IEEE 1588 PTP protocol to ensure consistent data acquisition across sensors at the microsecond level, preventing data fusion errors caused by time delay differences. For measurement errors caused by vibration and temperature changes during vehicle operation, compensation mechanisms need to be incorporated into the hardware design and software algorithms to ensure measurement stability over long periods.

LiDAR is not without its problems and has drawbacks in many traffic scenarios. For example, in harsh weather conditions, water droplets and snow particles can cause scattering and refraction of laser propagation, introducing measurement errors. Efforts need to be made in laser cover design and point cloud filtering algorithms. In complex urban road scenarios, occlusion and multiple reflective surfaces can lead to uneven point cloud density or local blind spots, placing higher demands on the computational efficiency and robustness of real-time algorithms. LiDAR is also very expensive. How to reduce the unit price of solid-state LiDAR to the thousand-yuan level through economies of scale, modular design, and supply chain collaboration, and achieve mass production of millions of units, is a bottleneck that urgently needs to be overcome in the industrialization process.

LiDAR, as the "three-dimensional eye" of autonomous driving systems, has become the cornerstone of the perception layer of autonomous driving due to its unique advantages in distance measurement, 3D environment modeling, and high-precision positioning. Although it still needs continuous optimization in terms of cost, reliability, and algorithm complexity, with the development of solid-state, large-scale, and intelligent technologies, LiDAR will inevitably play an even more important role in autonomous driving and even broader intelligent transportation systems, bringing greater safety and efficiency to future modes of transportation.
