I. Basic Cognition of Natural Language Understanding

1. System Input

The developed natural language processing system must be able to handle large-scale real-world text, unlike previous research systems which could only process a limited number of words and typical sentences. Only in this way can the developed system have real practical value.

2. System Output

Given the extreme difficulty of truly understanding natural language, the system is not required to have a deep understanding of natural language text, but rather to extract useful information from it. This could include automatically extracting index terms, filtering, searching, automatically extracting key information, and automatically summarizing natural language text.

At the same time, due to the emphasis on "large scale" and "authentic texts", the following two aspects of foundational work have also been valued and strengthened.

(1) Development of large-scale real-world corpora. Large-scale corpora of real-world texts processed to varying degrees are the foundation for studying the statistical properties of natural language. Without them, statistical methods are like water without a source.

(2) The compilation of large-scale, information-rich dictionaries. The importance of computer-available dictionaries with tens of thousands, hundreds of thousands, or even millions of words and rich information (such as word collocation information) for natural language processing is obvious.

While these new trends have brought achievements to the field of natural language processing, from a theoretical and methodological perspective, these systems rely more on statistical methods and other "simple" methods or techniques due to the difficulties in collecting, organizing, representing, and effectively applying large amounts of knowledge. One breakthrough in natural language processing theory is the substantive understanding of natural language; research on the true understanding of natural language has made progress.

II. Natural Language Understanding for Humanoid Robots

In terms of language understanding, advanced humanoid robots can accurately capture, analyze, and understand human language input through speech recognition technology. They can comprehend various grammatical structures, lexical meanings, and contextual information, thereby accurately grasping the speaker's intention. They can also engage in dialogue, responding and guiding appropriately based on the content of the conversation, demonstrating a certain degree of interactive capability.

In terms of language expression, humanoid robots can also generate natural and fluent speech output through speech synthesis technology. They can express their thoughts and opinions clearly and accurately, answer various questions, and communicate effectively with humans. Some humanoid robots can also adjust their language expression and tone according to different situations and conversation partners, making them more natural and friendly. For example, when communicating with children, they will use simple and easy-to-understand language; while when communicating with adults, they will use more formal and professional language.

However, humanoid robots still have some limitations in their language comprehension and expression abilities. For example, they may make mistakes when dealing with vague, ambiguous, or complex language expressions; they may also have difficulty understanding some abstract concepts or emotional expressions. In addition, the language ability of humanoid robots is also limited by their training data and algorithms, and different humanoid robots may vary in their language comprehension and expression.

In general, humanoid robots' language comprehension and expression abilities are continuously improving, but further research and development are still needed. With the continuous advancement of technology, humanoid robots are expected to achieve even better performance in language communication, bringing more convenience and assistance to human life and work.
