Abstract : This paper introduces the improvement method of the electrical control system of a veneer production line, focusing particularly on the optimization of the PLC application structure and the overall system tuning during the transformation process. This significantly improves the performance and efficiency of the veneer production line after the transformation. Keywords : Veneer production line, Programmable Logic Controller, Frequency Converter 1 Introduction Veneer production lines are mainly used for veneer processing on various engineered wood substrates such as medium (high) density fiberboard, plywood, and particleboard. They are suitable for veneering with low-pressure melamine-impregnated paper, decorative paper, sliced veneer, PVC film, etc., and are an effective way to increase the added value of engineered wood products. They are also key production equipment in industries such as engineered wood flooring. Due to the huge development potential of the engineered wood secondary processing industry, a large number of small and medium-sized enterprises have started to operate veneer production lines. However, due to limitations such as investment scale, the veneer production lines used are mainly domestically produced small-scale production lines, and their equipment performance still has many shortcomings. Therefore, it is necessary to upgrade and improve the equipment, reduce energy consumption, and increase efficiency. We have been commissioned by several wood flooring and engineered wood product manufacturers to innovate and transform the electrical control systems of their production lines. Below, we discuss some successful practices in the transformation of the electrical control systems of veneer production lines. 2 Shortcomings of Laminating Production Lines 2.1 Equipment Performance Does Not Meet Process Requirements Laminating technology is highly complex, with stringent requirements for each process. In the early 21st century, domestically produced veneer production lines widely adopted small programmable logic controllers (PLCs), and variable frequency speed control was used for the drive motors of loading and unloading trolleys, effectively fulfilling the complex sequential control requirements of the veneer production line. However, some companies have not truly mastered the technology, resulting in a lack of analytical and problem-solving capabilities for quality issues. Furthermore, some equipment performance does not meet process requirements, leading to frequent quality problems. We have found that some veneer production lines experience slippage between paper and board, inaccurate positioning, and other issues during operation, severely affecting the quality of veneered artificial boards, increasing scrap rates, wasting raw materials, and raising production costs. Users are very dissatisfied with this production situation but are unsure how to improve it. Lacking the resources to purchase new equipment, how to upgrade existing equipment effectively with minimal expense has become a pressing issue.
