I. Process Overview Handan Iron and Steel CSP Plant is a thin slab hot continuous rolling production line that was commissioned and put into operation at the end of 1999. It mainly consists of the following parts: two continuous casting machines, three heating furnaces, one roughing mill, six finishing mills, and two coilers. The heating furnaces, spanning 179.6m, are the intermediate link connecting the continuous casting and rolling mills. The two heating furnaces of the same length are arranged in parallel. The heating furnace tracking system tracks and controls each slab entering the heating furnace. Slabs from furnace #1 can directly exit the furnace and enter the rolling mill, while slabs from furnace #2 are conveyed to furnace #1 via a swing section and exit from furnace #1 before entering the rolling mill. This allows both lines to share a single rolling mill, thereby improving mill utilization and ensuring the designed annual production capacity of 2.5 million tons. The heating furnace is the bottleneck of the entire production line; any problem will inevitably cause a shutdown and affect production. The heating furnace drive control system mainly refers to the drive control of the furnace rolls, and furnace roll control is the key to the material tracking system. By controlling the rotation speed and direction of each furnace roller, various control functions for the cast billet are achieved. These mainly include the following situations: ① constant speed conveying; ② acceleration; ③ deceleration; ④ stopping; ⑤ oscillation. After entering the heating furnace, the cast billet moves forward at a constant speed. Upon passing the heating section, it begins to accelerate, moving at 80 m/min to the soaking section. It stops 3 m from the exit to await the rolling signal, or stops behind the previous billet at a interval of 2.5 m. When the rolling signal arrives, it exits the furnace sequentially and enters the rolling mill. During the waiting process, the cast billet should oscillate back and forth under the control of the drive. II. Control System The heating furnace at Handan Iron and Steel CSP Plant adopts heating control technology from the German company LOI. Its hardware equipment uses the German company SIEMENS S7400 PLC and MM440 frequency converter. Communication and control of the drive equipment are achieved through the internationally popular PROFIBUS fieldbus.
