Abstract : This paper introduces the research, development, and application of the automatic control and tracking system for the No. 5 plate caster in the Jigang No. 1 steelmaking plant. This system significantly improves the casting rate and greatly reduces the labor intensity of workers. The machines were limited to producing only 165mm x 800mm cross-section plain carbon steel. Both machines were from the 1970s, with outdated technology and equipment. Maintenance and repair were extensive, spare parts consumption was high, and production efficiency was low, severely hindering further capacity expansion in the First Steel Plant. The company decided to dismantle the No. 1 and No. 2 small slab continuous casting machines and rebuild them into a single large slab continuous casting machine, No. 5, with a maximum slab cross-section of 200mm x 1400mm, a casting speed of 0.9–2m/min, and a designed capacity of 700,000 tons. This project fully realized the potential of the First Steel Plant and further released its production capacity.
