Research on serial communication between frequency converter and host computer based on TMS320LF2407A

Abstract : In variable frequency speed control systems, serial communication is typically used to achieve long-distance communication between the frequency converter and the host computer. Based on a detailed analysis of serial data interface standards (RS-232, RS-485), a conversion circuit from RS-232 to RS-485 for the host computer is designed. The hardware interface circuit, communication protocol, and software design method for long-distance serial communication between the frequency converter and the host computer based on the TMS320LF2407A are presented. Initialization code for the serial communication interface program between the host computer and the slave computer is given. The method for writing the host computer serial communication program using the MSComm control in VC++ 6.0 is also explained. Keywords : Digital signal processor; TMS320LF2407A; Serial data interface standard; Asynchronous serial communication; Inverter digital signal processing (DSP) utilizes dedicated or general-purpose digital signal processing chips to process signals through digital computation methods. The TMS320LF2407A is a low-cost, high-performance 16-bit fixed-point DSP developed by Texas Instruments (TI) specifically for digital motor control (DMC) applications. It integrates a high-performance DSP core with rich microcontroller peripheral functions, providing an ideal solution for control system applications [1]. Our frequency converter design uses the TMS320LF2407A as the main control chip for these reasons. To enable monitoring of multiple frequency converters by a host computer, a PC is used for setting parameters, displaying parameters, and real-time control. The communication method utilizes the LF2407A's asynchronous communication interface SCI (Serial Communication Interface) to communicate serially with the host computer via RS-485 (Recommended Standard 485). The host computer can change the speed setpoint, forward/reverse rotation, and display the current motor speed in the DSP program through serial communication.
