Abstract: This paper addresses the advantages of imported soft magnetic alloy materials for stepper motors in quartz electronic watches, such as their high quality and performance. An improved cold rolling process was employed to enhance the quality of domestically produced permalloy, resulting in the development of high-precision permalloy strip steel. Keywords: Stepper motor, Permalloy strip steel 1. Introduction In recent years, China's electronic watch industry has developed rapidly. Many watch manufacturers have imported processing equipment from abroad, while simultaneously importing soft magnetic alloys for stepper motors in quartz electronic watches. To change the reliance on imported alloy materials, developing high-precision soft magnetic materials suitable for domestic production in electronic watches is of significant economic importance. Previously, the materials produced by our institute differed from imported materials in several ways, primarily in appearance. Imported materials exhibited: ① extremely strict thickness tolerances, such as 0.60–0.65 mm for wire frame materials and 0.57 mm for sheet materials, with a thickness tolerance of -0.02 mm; ② a wide range of width specifications with strict tolerances, ranging from 18–25 mm with a tolerance of -0.2 mm; slitting burrs less than 0.03 mm and side bending less than 2 mm/m; ③ strip coil weight greater than 20 kg. In terms of internal quality, imported materials generally have higher performance, better consistency, and meet certain hardness requirements in delivery. To meet the high-precision requirements of soft magnetic alloys for stepper motors in quartz electronic watches, after several years of experimentation and cold rolling process exploration, the production process is now mature and capable of mass production, changing the reliance on imported materials and achieving certain economic benefits. 2. Experimental Methods Firstly, 1J50 and 1J85 alloys with better performance were selected from mass production billets. Experiments were conducted to test the effects of different deformation rates on magnetic properties and hardness, seeking the optimal process to simultaneously achieve the required magnetic properties and hardness. Secondly, the influence of different cold rolling passes on thickness tolerance was studied, attempting to determine the cold rolling passes that ensure tolerance accuracy. Finally, the influence of tension on side bending during cold rolling was tested to ensure good straightness of the finished strip. The magnetic properties of the material were measured using the impact method, and the hardness (HV1) was determined using a Vickers hardness tester.
