Abstract : This paper analyzes the motion characteristics of a gantry planer and introduces the feasibility and implementation method of using a frequency converter combined with a PLC to automate the gantry planer, so as to improve its processing efficiency and accuracy. Keywords: Gantry planer, frequency converter, PLC The gantry planer of Weihai Precision Machine Tool Accessories Factory is mainly used to process various planes, inclined planes and grooves on large workpieces. Due to long-term use, problems such as reduced accuracy, poor speed regulation and low production efficiency have occurred, requiring maintenance and transformation. Considering the requirements of the original equipment and processing requirements, such as a speed regulation ratio of more than 40:1, it can be used for planing and milling, static error of less than 5%, constant and stable cutting force, low impact, automatic deceleration when the tool enters and exits, low power consumption, safety and reliability, and easy maintenance, we decided to use a frequency converter combined with a PLC to transform it. 1 Structure and process requirements of gantry planer 1.1 Basic structure of gantry planer The gantry planer is mainly composed of 7 parts, as shown in Figure 1. The bed is a box-shaped part with V-shaped guide rails. The worktable is mounted on the machine bed. A helical rack underneath the worktable meshes with gears in the transmission mechanism, allowing for reciprocating motion. The crossbeam is used to mount the vertical tool holders; movement is strictly prohibited during planing operations. It can only be moved when the worktable is stationary to adjust the tool holder height. The two vertical tool holders can move rapidly horizontally along the crossbeam guide rails or vertically along the tool holder's own slide rails for rapid movement or working feed. The left and right side tool holders and feed boxes can move rapidly up and down or automatically feed along the column guide rails.
