CNC systems based on PCs and Windows operating systems represent the development trend of CNC technology. This paper introduces the basic principles of a microcomputer CNC system for wire EDM and explores a practical method for implementing stepper motor control and interrupt handling via software under a Windows environment. It also proposes some ideas for CNC system research in China. I. Introduction In the field of computer control, with the development of hardware, high-performance industrial PCs (IPCs) based on the ISA bus have become the most widely used mainstream products recently. This is mainly due to the software compatibility between IPCs and PCs. Furthermore, the continuous emergence of high-performance peripheral I/O modules and the rapid development of actual industrial networks have created a favorable development environment for IPCs. It can be said that the era of IPCs has arrived. In addition, with the rapid development of computer software and hardware technology in recent years, CNC systems that previously relied on DOS or proprietary operating systems and microcontroller technology are increasingly unable to meet the practical needs of integration, openness, and ease of use. In today's computer control field, whether the control software is based on the Windows platform has become one of the important standards for product competitiveness. Currently, products based on the Windows platform have occupied 90% of the market share. The Windows multitasking operating system, with its user-friendly graphical user interface (GUI), robust memory management, intuitive operation, comprehensive support for Internet/Intranet communication, superior hardware compatibility, and excellent 32-bit software environment, is increasingly widely used in industrial control, becoming an excellent platform for real-time control. Therefore, many countries abroad, in response to this demand and development trend, have accelerated research on CNC systems based on PCs as the hardware platform and Windows as the software development platform.
